Re: Front fork travel
:banghead: unfortunately in most shop manuals some things are assumed as previous knowledge So true. All my other bikes are from the 50's and 60's. With their fairly basic front forks, it is usually put in a certain amount of oil with no concerns about stantion position. Ah well never too old to ma...

Re: Front fork travel
Thanks McTool. You have confirmed what I eventually thought was the problem. When I was adding the oil to the forks that I had extended, I thought this is a lot of oil. It's a pity I didn't stop and reread the instructions. I still think they are ambiguous, but that's down to me. :banghead: Onward a...

Re: Front fork travel
Good point. The amount of oil is the thing that is worrying me slightly. I filled the forks to the recommended 180mm from the top. However, the manual said "perform the oil filling with barrels at end of stroke inside the slidings and without springs and spacers. I took this to mean that the sl...

Re: Front fork travel
Ok I decided to just drain the oil and change it for 5W to see if that will make them a little softer. I took the spring out and checked the "stroke" and it was close to the 4.9 inches in the manual so all seems ok there. I think I was just surprised at how hard the suspension felt on a ro...

Front fork travel
Hi. I have just replaced my tyres, thanks to MC Reifenservice, Alfred Schenk for rhe new Shinko's. While I was at it I did the wheel bearings and thought I would change the fork seals. All seemed to go OK. At a suggestion, I think on here, I used 7.5W oil instead of the 5.0W oil. When I got the fork...

Re: Shortage of 16 inch tires
Thanks Hardo. I am going to need new tyres in the next year, if I don't use the Paso very much. I contacted Schenk and they are going to add me to the list. At least that is two of us now. Hopefully more will follow. Schenk told me that the latest news was that the tires will be produced in the next...

Re: Valve clearances and stuff
5 minutes with a piece of fine grade emery and the closer shim slides on a treat. What was I worried about. A lot easier than taking the head off.

Re: Valve clearances and stuff
Thanks again Derek. I had already drained the coolant when I took the radiator off to give me a bit more room to get at it.

Re: Valve clearances and stuff
Thank you Derek. It is always encouraging when you hear from someone who has had the same problem. I know access will be difficult but I am pleased that you succeeded in removing the burr with a bit of emery. I will definitely give this a go. As you say it can't be much material that needs to come o...

Re: Valve clearances and stuff
Hi guys. I have been away from the bike for several weeks and have just started working on her again. I did the first 3 openers and closers and I am really pleased with the clearances that I now have. Now number 4 which just happens to be the least accessible (horizontal inlet). I took the opener sh...

Re: Valve clearances and stuff
The factory ones are crap and a far better option is to use MTB collets ( google em up ) they aint cheap but are good value in the long run . Regards Hamish Hi. I discussed it with Mike Guidera and went for the MTB collets . Expensive but I agree that they seem like a better option in the long run....

Re: Valve clearances and stuff
Thanks Paso 750. The minimum it is, or at least I will try to set them at those values. I am just waiting for my bits to arrive from EMSDUC. I found Mike Guidera really helpful.

Re: Valve clearances and stuff
Having looked at the differing information regarding valve clearances on this site I have decided to aim for:-
opening inlet clearance 0.1mm - 0.12mm
closing inlet clearance 0.02mm - 0.04mm
opening exhaust clearance 0.12mm - 0.15mm
closing exhaust clearance 0.02mm - 0.04mm
opening inlet clearance 0.1mm - 0.12mm
closing inlet clearance 0.02mm - 0.04mm
opening exhaust clearance 0.12mm - 0.15mm
closing exhaust clearance 0.02mm - 0.04mm

Re: Valve clearances and stuff
Looking at the workshop manual it has the clearance as 0.1mm opening and 0.02mm closing. It would appear therefore that the inlet and the exhaust valves have the same gap. As the shims only appear to be available in 0.05mm increments I presume you go for the nearest one to the correct value. Is this...
