Swingarm Bearings, Seals, and Spacers

Post by Desmo_Demon »

Since this was brought up on another thread, I decided it may be good to start a new thread to make searches for this information easier to find. This all started when Paso750 removed his swingarm and took note of the seals........

paso750 states:

"I removed everything I could but the bearings are stuck in place.

As first info:
the seals at the front say: INA 62 G 25-32-4
These have a metal ring like the steering seals
Not sure what the G stands for but the size 25-32-4 is used i.e. on 2001-2003 Honda CR250, 1997 CR500.
(according to what I`ve read "B1" would mean "with single sided metal housing, but it says G...)

the seals where the linkage mounts say: BAOF 20-26-4 Cortego C18
(BA = rubber shrouded, OF = without spring)
This size I could find on 1992 HUSQVARNA CR250, 1997-2000 HUSQVARNA TE610/570 swingarm

Pls note that the info on other bikes using the same size seals doesn`t grant that these are also the same type of seals (i.e. BAOF) one would need to check."

I started looking at the bearings and seals on my swingarm, last night. I left the seals and needle bearings on the chain side of the swingarm installed, as they looked and felt good. I cleaned the spacers and repacked the needle bearings. The brake side was a different situation. The sealed bearings were locked solid. I couldn't get them to turn at all, so.....I removed the whole assembly of bearings and spacers. It ends up that these two sealed bearings are the same size that are used in the wheels....

From the old bearing....
SKF #63004-2R/S
20mm id x 42mm od x 16mm wide

The new SKF bearing would be #63004-2RS1

After replacing these bearings, I still need to check the three other sets of needle bearings and seals for the shock linkage, then......I get to reassemble it.

As also given in a thread about wheel bearings, here is the link to the USA SKF site for the wheel bearing specs...

paso750 wrote:How did you get the bearings out ?
The sealed bearings on the brake side are press fit into the swingarm, and also on a stepped center spacer between the two of them. This stepped spacer is similar to the one in the front wheel hub (naturally much shorter :D ) where the inner race rests on a stepped section of the spacer. Here is a picture I did for my website for the front wheel spacer...

Image

There is also a spacer for the outer race of the bearings on the inside of the swingarm that is held into place with the bolt on the top and the bottom of the swingarm. This is an aluminum spacer that has threaded holes for those bolts. You don't need to remove these bolts or the spacer, but I did.....

I didn't get the stepped-drift from my buddy who removed the front wheel bearings for me, so I just used a punch and hammer while hitting the edge of the center spacer in the inner race. I hit it on alternating sides to make the extraction more even and to prevent binding. Hitting the spacer on the one side will push it out of that bearing and it will come out with the opposite bearing still on the spacer.

There was not an issue for me driving the inner bearing out with the spacer, but when it came to driving out the outer bearing, I couldn't reach it squarely with a punch and still use the hammer to drive it out, as the other side of the swingarm was in the way. At this point, I removed the two bolts for the center spacer that supports the outer races of the bearings, and then removed the spacer from the inside of the swingarm where I'd just removed the inner bearing. I then drove the outer bearing all the way through the swingarm until it fell out as the inner bearing did. The swingarm hole is a constant bore, so you can easily drive the bearing straight through the opening.

I hope that made sense and wasn't too difficult to understand.

Edit - I decided to make a cut-away view to try to help people better understand what I was trying to say. I hope this helps......

General Electric is always hiring.....just not for the easy jobs like what I have.

Here is a picture of all the swingarm components from the brake side. I have them laid out as they would be mounted in the swingarm. The inner and outter race support spacers are one on top of the other, but the inner spacer actually goes inside the outer spacer (naturally)....

From the old bearing....
SKF #63002-2R/S......If I read it correctly
20mm id x 42mm od x 16mm wide

The new SKF bearing would be #63004-2RS1
are you sure ? If I check on the link you posted
63004-2RS1 is 20x42x16
63002-2RS1 is 15x32x13

Did you misread the last digit as a "2" instead of a "4" ?

the seals at the front say: INA 62 G 25-32-4
These have a metal ring like the steering seals

the seals where the linkage mounts say: BAOF 20-26-4 Cortego C18
(BA = rubber shrouded, OF = without spring)
I got a new set from my dealer, what I got is

Cortego A13 CFW B1OF 25-32-4
and
Cortego A3 CFW B1OF 20-26-4

the first is only a different manufacturer as the one that was in the swingarm, but the seal at the linkage mount is in fact a different one. The original one was full rubber the one I was given is a B1 (with metal outer ring).
The seals for the linkage are ordered.

PS: this doesn`t belong here but I`m desperately looking for 2 seals. Measures are 12-24-13 and 12-26-5. These are for the waterpump of my Gilera and as it seems impossible to find. Any hint is highly appreciated !!!

When I wrote it down at the house, before I made that post while I was at work, the last digit was a little smeared and was difficult to read, but it looked like a "2". I corrected my original post with the "2" as a "4", as I went back home and checked. When I first wrote it, I knew it didn't seem correct that they'd change the number by one digit, so I went back home and double-checked.

ok, finally continued and removed the bearings.
On the 2 needle bearings on the left swingarm side it says:

HK 2520 INA WX
(outer diameter 32mm, width 20mm, inner diameter 25mm)
http://www.consbrgs.com/page.taf?detail=196_1_39

On the 2 needle bearings which are mounted where the shock linkage connects it says:

HK 2020 INA WX
(outer diameter 26mm,width 20mm, inner diameter 20mm)
http://www.consbrgs.com/page.taf?detail=196_1_31

http://www.bearingcie.com/needle_bearin ... motive.htm

To remove the bearings (the ones in the front) I used a 24 and a 30mm wrench nut which both fitted by millimeter in the swingarm holes.

Note that the parts manual at the linkage mount of the swingarm shows (30) spacer and (28) washer. Both pieces where not there. While the washer may just have missed there cannot be a spacer because the step that stops the bearing when it`s pressed back in place is part of the swingarm. A spacer would only be required if the hole where the bearings are would have the same diameter through it`s whole length instead in the middle section the diameter is smaller.

At last I received the new seals for the linkage. The package says:
075549265 Anello Tenuta ST4-900M-SS/03
There`s no printing on the seals at all.
Measures are:
outer diameter: 26,16mm
inner diameter: 19mm
height 4mm
type is B1OF (single sided metal housing w/o spring)

PS: a good page to look up bearings, listing alternative types from different manufacturers is:
http://www.consbrgs.com/html/catalog3.html
unluckily there`s no search function so you`ll have to click "forward until you find what you`re looking for.

to close this.
I just removed the bearings from the linkage as I have 2 of them.

The bearing of the linkage (arm) where it mounts to the frame has the following bearing:

HK 2030 INA VWX

In the middle of the arm (where the 2 connecting rods are mounted) there are 2 bearings (and as I thought already with no spacer inbetween them as the hole where the bearings are in is narrower in the middle). The type of these 2 bearings is:

HK 2020 INA WX

As there is no spacer inbetween removal is difficult and not possible without destroying the bearings.

To drive out the HK 2030 VWX bearing I used a 18mm wrench nut.

Both the HK 2030 and the HK 2020 have the same outer diameter. Difference is the width.

the 2 bearings in the sprocket carrier are:
SKF 6005-2RS1 / C3

(in the 750 Sport these are: SKF 6204-2RS1 / C3)
