Brake pads

Post by PasoRoo »

Hi all,

Had the belts done on the Paso today and a new clutch slave piston put in (yes G, the expensive German one :) ) by a very good Ducati workshop here in Canberra that delivers good work and doesn't charge you a fortune. They also checked out the front brake because, despite putting in new pads and bleeding until it bled no more, the brakes are still not fantastic. The mechanic advised me that in his opinion Brembo pads would get the best result on the cast iron disks. The current pads are Bendix MA6 ones which I put in two weeks ago.

What is people's experience with different brake pads? Bevel Heaven have a set of 300mm disks with Brembo Gold calipers and a 996 master cylinder which not only looks the business but, I assume, would also improve the braking. I realise that the original F08 calipers will never compare to modern hardware, but I would like to get a brake lever that doesn't come back to the handle bars when you need to stop pretty urgently.

Cheers,

Mike

I have the same combo on my red 907, but with a 999's 19 mm. radial master cylinder (better than the 996 one): the top          .
Great improvement above the stock braking of 907, which is far better than the 750 one!!!!!

Hi Mike,
I have just fitted a pair of 916 calipers, 907 master cyl (because I didn't want to upset the look of the controls) and a set of s/s braided lines on my 906. Even with the stock discs it has improved the braking 500%. Image
I'm planning on making a set of 320mm discs next winter to improve it even more.

Ken, 320s were my idea, didn`t you want to make floating 280s ? :truck: :)
I like that design a lot. Actually better than what I`m currently doing, but I`m going for existing brake discs. Do you happen to know how much brake disc carriers wear ? Anyone know ?

Actually the basic theory is not that complicated. If you ie decide to make a new carrier only you could go through the TRW catalogue. You`ll find the design and basic measurements of all discs they produce. Choose one (for instance one that has a similar or bigger inner and mounting diameter but actually that`s irrelevant as long as you make sure the outer ring`s inner diameter is bigger than the mounting hole diameter of the Paso disc). Buy a pair (of course they can be from any other manufacturer), remove the floaters to disassemble the discs and start the measuring. You´ll want to gather all outer dimensions and the thickness of the disk carrier. Combine that with the inner diameter and mounting hole measurements of the Paso discs and you`re good to start.
Of course it`s more complicated than that and there`re several other ways to do this. What makes it a little easier is that the P750/906 discs have no offset.

I am very sorry G, I didn't want to steal your idea, and yes, I was going to go with the 280mm discs but your suggestion of 320mm discs made absolute sense. If you're going to build something why not go the whole hog. I was going to go with 420 grade s/s for the disc and 7075 T6 grade alloy for the carrier. I haven't had the time yet to determine the clearances but if someone here could help with this I would be very greatful.

Haha. Ken, I was just joking. Are you planning to make the complete discs ?
edit: sorry, I overread that you`re actually doing that

If the finances permit, I would like to build the whole disc and adapter package. but that would need the approval of the minister for war and finances and at the moment thats like getting sex, just not happening.

Hi Mike,
i currently have EBC pads fitted and the brakes are also pretty poor. Maybe the original brembo compound would be better. i have a warp in one of my discs as well so makes it even worse. I contacted Steve at Bevelheavan last week re same kit you are talking about and he is out of stock of the 300mm discs - hoping to get some 280mm EBC discs in. Also he was not sure the 300mm disc (or the 280mm disc) is a bolt on to the original oscam wheels, looking at it i doubt it too, unless you have changed your wheels. Let us know what you fit.
Cheers

Hi all,

Helpful info as always :) . I think I'll try the original Brembo pads and see if they improve braking.

Clive, the Bevel Heaven product info for the 300mm kit says that it is a straight bolt-on on all bikes that had the F08 calipers, such as the 750 F1. I thought that the F1 had the Oscam 16" ones like the Paso but that may not be correct.

I do have the rims to change to 17" wheels but they need painting first.

Cheers,

Mike
