Speedo drive tab washer threw in the towel ...

Post by fasterdammit »

My bike has gone more miles without a speedometer cable than it has with one, so when the speedometer started showing 0mph at speed recently, I chalked it up to the cable. I ordered a new cable; but when I took the old one off - it appeared to be serviceable still. Curious, but I figured I'd take a closer look when I tore it all apart to clean up the drive and put the new cable in anyway.

Today was that day. And when I pulled the drive off the axle to clean & inspect it ... I got a better understanding of why the old cable still looked ok: the tab on the drive washer was snapped off. Well that's a nuisance ...

I'm hoping this tab washer @ BevelHeaven will fit. Anyone have another resource, just in case?

Could be wrong but may have to replace entire unit. This Ducati part is actually reasonable and about $65 US.

Ha ha, that always makes me laugh. If you have ever dismantled a speedo drive gearbox for the Paso you will find out that the lube 'nipple' closed by a bearing is a dummy. It doesn't feed to the internal splines. The only way to lube the drive is to remove it from the wheel, take off the circlip and gasket, then dribble oil onto it or soak it in oil.

Nope. Ordered the part mentioned in my previous post from Bevel Heaven, and replaced it on my speedo drive. It needed a little coercing from a Dremel (wheel tine was too long, and the inner diameter wasn't perfectly round, so it wouldn't fit, but that wasn't a big deal).

There's a spring clip that holds it in place on the drive unit, and there's also a thin seal underneath it (almost didn't see mine when I took it apart).

Good to know about the ball bearing "oil port", JWilliam; I didn't dissect mine far enough to see if it worked or not. Good thing I cleaned & lubed it on the bench.

glad to hear. I love being incorrect on stuff like this when a better solution presents itself.

Ah ha ha ha , did you think that was a grease nipple ? that would have been good to watch . I just used gear oil , put it in the top of the speedo cable and a few days later its on the wheel so I know its getting right thru . I just think the less friction in the cable etc the less stress on the speedo drive :)
