I got a regulator but......

Post by Hunter »

..I need to be sure how to wire it so the smoke stays in!
I have searched the board but I have not found a definitive answer on what to connect where.
I have a 5 wire replacement for the 6 wire stock RR. Battery, ground and lamp are no problem but what do I do with the 2 yellows and 1 red of the alternator to connect them to the 2 yellows of the new RR?
Please be gentle, I just don't want to torch anything!
Thanks, Hunter

Electrex to original wiring
yellow -> both pink (alternator)
yellow -> red (alternator)
white -> light blue (charging warning light)
red -> red/black & orange (battery +)
green -> black (battery -)
(the brown wire of the Paso wiring loom formely going to the regulator is not used any longer)

Note: If the measured voltage between the two yellow wires from the alternator (which are pink when they get to the regulator/rectifier) is between 50-100V you should wire the reg/rect as shown on the first picture of the instructions hence connect yellow 1 from the reg/rect to one yellow(pink) wire from the alternator and yellow 2 to the other. In this case the red wire from the alternator isn`t used and can be isolated. Install like this if the first wiring instructions don`t work. (To check simply connect a voltmeter to the battery. When the engine is started and the regulator/rectifier is connected correctly the voltage will increase i.e. from 12V to ca. 14V)

Thank you Higgy.
One more question: On the original it seems that the red wire to the alternator had 12v on it from the regulator. Do I need to make a 12v connection to that wire externally for this to work now?

NOTE:
For models with 2 x Yellow and 1 x Red generator wires, please use type RR51, with both yellow
generator wires connected together as 1 phase wire to the RR51, and the red generator wire as the
second phase wire to the RR51.

So here's what I have:
When I hook the 2 yellow from the alt together to one yellow of the RR and the red from the alt to the other yellow I get no charge. When I hook the 2 yellow from the alt to the 2 yellow on the RR I do get a charge and about 50 VAC on the yellows at 3k rpm. But will it live in the long run with the red to the alt disconnected?

Higgy,

It is this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261367017203?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

The instructions you listed are identical to those supplied with mine. When I hook it up as a 2 wire it works, as a 3 wire it does not.
This is where Mr Spock raises his eyebrow and says "Fascinating".
Any ideas?
I suppose to be safe I should pull the engine cover off and have a look. I just put all the fairing back on!! :banghead:

looks like the two yellow should be to the stator,should not matter which goes to which
and the red should go to the battery

unless of course you have the 3 wire stator :banghead:

Heh. It has 3 wires, acts like it has 2. Not just an Italian, an Italian woman! :lol:
I should know, I married one.

I am reluctant to hook the red wire from the stator to the battery. I can't see having 12VDC on an alternator.

with a 3 wire stator the two yellow from the regulator are joined and hooked to one stator wire and then the red to the other stator wire see the 2nd example on the electro sheet

Three Wire Stator Connection
If the stator is a three wire type, with
two YELLOW wires and one red one
coming from it, hook it up according
to DIAGRAM 2. The difference is that
the two YELLOW wires are connected
together and connect to one YELLOW
input wire on the RR. The RED wire
from the stator connects to the
other YELLOW RR input. The other
connections of the RR are like in
DIAGRAM 1.
If this setup doesn’t produce any power,
then the stator is wound differently (on
some models this is the case) Forget
about the RED wire emerging from the
stator,and hook it up like in DIAGRAM 1.
Then you will then have the full output
available
