5 speed motors are narrower than the 6 speed motors, but same bolt patter/spacing. As mentioned, if you put in some other motor, be sure to check the chain line, which you might anyway since you tossed a chain, and a bad chain line can create that very problem. Since you have a 14t sprocket, it was changed at some time, and may have been the incorrect offset. (I don't know the correct sprocket for the Paso)

thank you all for the detailed and carefully presented ideas.

all of the above information will be taken into consideration.

I love the machine, the community, and everything else that goes along with Ducati ownership. Above all else, I am sentimentally attached to the bike, and want to see it alive again.

to have the engine repaired, what would the preparation steps be for me? removal of the engine, and the disassembly of the internals to remove everything from the cases so they can be handled/arranged/worked on in an easier environment?

or can repairs like the one I need be done with the motor installed?

thoughts? does anyone know a shop or person in Canada that does this kind of custom aluminum welding?

any decent welder should be able to fix it in place and it should not cost an arm and a left nut

There's always breakers like Ed Millich who usually has a motor.

Have you checked with some of the your local breakers? Putting a post in Craigslist sometimes gets a few reluctant owners to clean out their garage.

Where in the wide world of Canada do you call home?
