Bureaucracy strikes, not once but twice (or even 3 times?)

Dear all,

I am importing my 750 Paso from the Netherlands (where it got its first registration in May 1990) to Belgium. A few weeks ago I first registered the bike with the Belgian customs and there it turned out that their computer system only offers them 17 characters to register frame numbers. This is problematic as my frame number contains not fewer than 25 characters. Also my insurance company can only register a limited number of characters and I’m afraid the same will be the case for the Belgian DIV (Dienst Inschrijving Voertuigen = Department of motor vehicles Belgium). Yep, bureaucracy strikes, not once but twice and maybe even three times.

The number on my bike is: ZDM750P*xxxxxx*DGMxxxxxOM

My question is: what is the unique part of this frame number? I know “ZDM750P” stands for “Italy/Ducati/Motorcycle/750 Paso”. And I suppose “xxxxxx” is the unique frame number, but I’m not sure. And what does “DGMxxxxxOM” stand for? I went through the forum, but I mainly found information about US VIN-numbers.

Thank you for helping me out!

About the bike itself: I bought it in 2005 with only 11.000 kms on it. The guy who sold it to me was the second owner and traded in his Ducati 888 for the Paso at a local Ducati dealer, because his wife forced him to look for something safer. He hardly used the bike and then after having it standing in his garage collecting dust for some years he sold it to me. I always kept the bike and, now I’m living in Belgium and the bike is older than 25 years, I want to register it as an oldtimer (so called “O-plaat” in Belgium which stands for oldtimer license.). The Paso needs a little TLC, so I’m working on it now: brake overhaul, new timing belts, new tires, normal service etc.

Best regards, Ronald

Imho that`s a normal 13 digit old european VIN.
DGM52055OM is just a homologation certificate (which is the same on all Pasos that have that type of VIN) and a suffix to the frame number.
DGM = Direzione Generale della Motorizzazione (general department of motor vehicles/ type number)
OM = omologato dal Ministero dei Transporti e dell'Aviatione Civile (homologated by the department of civil transport and aviation)
xxyyyy is the frame serial number of which yyyy should be the actual production number of your frame.
ZDM750Pxxxxxx should be the only relevant number.

Maybe Frank.61 can help. He`s in Belgium, too and has the same kind of VIN.

just examples for the DGMxxxxOM number on older models:

Hi,

Thank you for your reply!
I'll have that number be registered then.

Hi, mine came from Holland lasy year and had the same discussion when I visited the customs (Genk).
I to told them that the DGM number was the homologation number so they didn't use that.

Worked.

Hi Ronald,

I registered mine (in Poland) using only xxxxxx as a frame number (ie. I used your details that you uploaded above) :)

Best!

Hi Frank,

I received the license plate today. So that went quite fast :)

@mvric, I guess there's two with the same number then . . .

I think & hope mvric is saying he only used the frame number for registration and not actually yours ;)
