Also, based on some of the other photos on the server, some bikes don't have the washer anymore
which only proves that others are missing it, not that it isn't required. One would have to fully screw an axle into a fork leg (w/o the rim), then measure the length of the thinner part of the axle. If that is less than the width of the rim the washer isn't needed.

You mean with the speedo drive in place?
It was tight against the wheel without the washer - I recall the mechanic torquing it down - so i don't think it's necessary for holding the wheel in place,
however if you have the axle threads sticking out on the left side they could be damaged.
Plus it looks stupid IMO for a bike that's so designed.

BTW - just a quick check of the other Duc's from this period, they all seem to have some kind of washer on the RH side
