What gearing are you running?

Post by ducinthebay »

The Paso came stock with a 15/38, and the Sport came stock with 15/39. I've heard some like 15/40. If the bike's converted to 17" wheels, should I plan on going up one in the back to stay the same?

So, what have you got, and do you like it?
What have you tried?

I have normal 15/38 in my 750 Paso, what feells quite nice to me(not tuned engine) and in my 907IE there is 15 in front(cause very difficult to find 14 from here) and rear is much bigger 45(from small 620 Monster), cause that my 907 engine is tuned with quite many improvments over normal engine. I have seen, that normally near all Ducatis after 906(after 1990) have geared too long to meet noise and emission standarts. FIRST Easy/good/cheap modification to Ducatis are one teeth smaller to front, or 3-6 bigger to rear. Surely that bigger to rear is good to do same time, as U change chain also. If counting alot, then bigger to rear is better, than smaler to front. But i think, its hard to find smaler Z=14 to Pasos and 907  Most ST owners have changed they sprockets to shorter gearing and very many changed 14 to front(15 is normal and that 14 is easy to find from many shops to ST).

I think, if U convert to 17" wheels, then better first test with normal gearing and then go on.... But surely 17" converions changes things. I havent done that yet to my 750 Paso (i have near all needeed stuff), so it can be, that 750 Engine needs shorter gearing, than 906/907/900SS, cause not so much power.... This was my taght today

Btw, i like very much that shorter gearing in my tuned 907IE, cause front wheel feels sometimes very light, when put 2 gear on and turn handgrip down :D Ported heads, FIM chip(tuned with flat top), FIM AMB, light flywheel, light 48 teeth STM clutch, open airbox with K&N, open pipes,.... and my neibours love..... :funny:

Well, I just put a 15/42 on the 750 Paso, and the rear sprocket is too big, in my opinion. 70mph is over 5k rpm, 80mph is over 6k. I like to run on open roads around 80, but I don't want to rev the thing out like that.

On the plus side, it slows me down, and maybe I'll get fewer tickets because of it.

If I had it to do over again, I'd go with 40 or 41. Wheelies are easier with more teeth in the rear, though! (if that sort of thing is important to you!)
The $900 Paso: DellOrto's, Dyna 5 ohm coils, Ignitech TCIP4; finally, a new set of tires! Goldentyre GT070/071

The bike is gone, but the nightmares continue...

17" wheels are going to raise your overall gearing (I think from my Wednesday morning blurry mechanics) so I would look to stock gearing for a 750 ss and then go 2 up in the back as I think Antii is right and the Paso's are generally slightly overgeared. My &50 won't rev out in top gear by quite some margin on Standard gearing.

+2 teeth on the back should be fine with a standard length chain to and is pretty close to -1 at the front.

I ride 15/42 with 17" rims and a std engine... this means about 4500 rpm at 90 km/h for 5th speed... I think it's quite easier to ride facing the original 16" rims and 15/38 stock
have nice rides, nicola
