does the 900SS crankshaft have the same stroke as the one of the 750 ?
One potential issue could be the engine housing. You might have to machine it to fit the larger cylinders.

Nope, looked into it already. The stud spacing is the big difference. then there is the clearance of getting the jugs into the cases, and I faintly remember something about the oil galley being different. Lots of challenges. Now fitting 800 heads might be doable, and give you those big valves. Same bore as the 750 as I remember it.
You are much better off just getting a 900 motor and dropping it in. Most Sports have a 3mm spacer on the right hand side of the motor between the frame. Allows a 900 motor to drop right in. Get an SS swingarm to match the pivot pin, and Bobs your uncle. Shock length and alignment are same same.
Cheers,

Hi,
I agree with the above and would like to ad that you are looking at a new exhaust system as well. A 750 system does not fit on the 900 ss engine. Try to get one of the 900 ss series as the other 900 ducati's (monster, paso etc) might get you into trouble due to the different location of the rear suspension spring.
Good luck with the job.
Cheers Joep

Re: 900ss cylinder and piston in 750 sport
thanks for all the answers guys, I just put some 82mm pistons and cylinders on my 400F3 which brings it out to 540cc (attention to valve size in future) and was thinking of doing something similar to one of my 750 sport engines as a test.
btw the F3 performed admirably at the recent Broadford Bonanza 2011 here in Victoria, Australia. If anyone is remotely near, its a well attended and very relaxed event for classic machinery.
