New owner with a few ??

Post by jr60 »

Hi

Only just picked up this '89 750 Sport to add to an ever increasing garage of Ducatis (888 Foggy Rep, ST3, M900 Cafe project). Had no intention of buying, but one of those 'too good' to let go deals - guy had done most of a full restoration and lost heart at the final stages.

The bike had been stripped, frame powder coated, engine blasted, and body work fully resprayed to a very high standard. Virtually 100% standard and complete, only thing I can find missing is 1 mirror (and the end cans - came with a set of 888 termi's!), so the idea is to bring her back to standard as much as poss.

Anyway have a few questions to start of with;
- Previous owner had the engine blasted left bare alloy, first job is to spray it back to black - was the org paint a gloss black?
- Oil lines are past there best, is it still possible to get braided lines?
- Same with brake/clutch, see that goodridge list most of it for the Paso, is it the same fitment or is there another option?
- Is there an option for fitting pipes that look as close to the standards (without paying a fortune for Conti's etc) ?

Have already started with engine out and prep'ing it for painting, pic with fairing is before the guy started to restore, other how I got her.

Cheers

Johnny

Johnny,
Welcome.
Bike looks nice. I agree with bringing it back to stock.

as for your questions:
- Previous owner had the engine blasted left bare alloy, first job is to spray it back to black - was the org paint a gloss black?
Original paint was a sort of satin finish. Some where between gloss and flat.
- Oil lines are past there best, is it still possible to get braided lines?
Never seen them, and they are unique to this bike only. Good luck on finding something. Let us know what you find.
- Same with brake/clutch, see that goodridge list most of it for the Paso, is it the same fitment or is there another option?
These should be easy. Same as Paso.
- Is there an option for fitting pipes that look as close to the standards (without paying a fortune for Conti's etc) ?
Unfortunately, the pipes are also unique to the Sport. The Paso pipes look the same, but have a different attachment, so they wont work. Keep searching e-bay. The pipes in the photo are the stock pipes. if the previous owner still has them, he would would have no need for them now.

Bitubo also have or at least had a compnent system where you could chose oil lines and fittings.
These didn´t look like the originals though as they had different colours.

Stein Dinse has one of the two oil lines
http://www.sd-tec.de/catalog/product_in ... anguage/sk

this shop in the US lists the other
https://www.domiracer.com/Comersus/stor ... duct=92333

and this shop in Switzerland lists both (if they actually have them stock I don´t know)

hey, I went through my parts boxes as I remembered I had an oil line that was sold to me as being from a Paso but it isn`t. I wasn´t sure if I had sold it. It´s still there & new.
It`s the upper/ shorter line of the two.
Let me know if you`re interested, I can make pics.

John,

I have a pair of NOS 750 Sport mufflers with the clamps as well as a pair of NOS stock mirrors (you did not mention which you need left or right).

Q1 Where are you located? I am in San Diego, CA

Q2 Would you be interested in doing some trading? I might be interested in that pair of 888 Termi mufflers.

I also have a lot of other NOS and used 750 Sport parts, including brakes, master cylinders, some body panels, gas tank, brand new carbon fibre rear hugger, etc.

Drop me a e-mail at hardy.john@cox.net.

Cheers,

John

Thanks for all the replies guys, have been busy stripping the bike (other project - the M900 Café, will have to take a step back for a while!), took the engine out and sprayed it – went for a black enamel in the end – looks pretty good.

Found a local place here in N Ireland that actually manufactures Hel lines so will get them to make up some brake/clutch lines, will change the front over to a 2 line system (Hel also do a pressure switch that can be fitted at the master cylinder).

As Hel also do oil lines I am investigating the possibility of getting some stainless braided oil lines made up – will let you know how this works out.

Will drop you an email John re pipes.

Cheers

Well as you can see from the pics I have been sort of busy over the summer!

As always the case with these things the bike looked better than she was (although only had 14k km's on the clock) - the org restoration had began in the late 90's and a lot needed to be done (lot was bodged) - so a complete stip down (down to the bottom end)was needed!

Nearly finished now just waiting for the reverse mega's to arrive (had a set of 851 cans on her but didn't look right) and 1 indicator from aus!

She has fired up and is running pretty well on the mik's although front cylinder seems to be running a bit hotter than the rear, but need to get her moving to tell.

Have a few minor fixes that may be asking advise on first being;

- on the parts dia it shows a large spacer along with the speedo drive on the lhs, is this fitted or is it just the speedo drive exploded?

Cheers

Johnny

the only thing I doubt works well is those double bent intake tubes. Not only is the shape no good for proper airflow but the filters are covered by the carb and near the rear cylinder so the intaken air will be hot. Not sure about riding the bike w/o belt covers, too.
A very nice bike though.

PS: Are you one of those guys who spent hundreds of $$$ for a set of new old Michelins ? ;)

Thanks for the comments guys, a few more pics as she nears completion. Just a few more bits n pieces to finish off - weld up link pipes to fit reverse megas, indicator to come from Australia, etc.

The old/new Michelins, came with the bike and they in pretty good condition. She also runs pretty well with the intakes (having a bit of distance between the carbs and filters is a good thing on a road bike (as it prevents fuel misting at low revs).
