occasional mis-fire

Post by viceversa »

Hi folks,I have a 1991 registered 906 that has an occasional mis-fire usually from cold.I have isolated it a little and found that when I gentley move the wires where they join the ecu box under the seat the mis usually stops straight away and never recurs again that day.Any ideas? :umm: i have never had the honour to own a ducati before and find this one a very good performer and a comfortable machine to use.I have put 10 40 fully synthetic oil in and it seems fine, what do you guys recommend, she has only done 13000 miles?
thanks in advance.

ONLY 15W-50 fully synthetic (like Shell Advance Ultra 4), never 10W-40(too thin).... Gearbox function much better with 15W-50 oil. I use earlier 5W-50 Mobil 1 fully synthetic, but now ONLY 15W-50... Never back to 5W-50....or to 10W-40, what is worst! I have learned by testing in my Ducatis.... :D

You can FEEL/HEAR difference, especially in gearbox (connection noises), when You have changed to 15W-50 fully syntehetic.... And DONT forget to warm up(WITH LOW RPMs!!!!) Your Ducati engine enough warm, before you go to street and use more rpms there. That is very important to Ducati engine.... Btw, here in Finland very many guys have changed to 15W-50 oil, when they have learned more about these marvelous engines, especially those, who know quite a lot about ducati mechanic...

Fair enough
I'll try it when I next change the oil to see what the difference is
I just would have thought that given the lower temperatures you guys have up there ( Even in summer it is a lower average than in the southe of the UK I believe - My Scandinavian climate knowledge is a little lacking!) that 15 40 would be too thick.
I shall give it a go

Everybody should use such oil, what feels best to use in his/her bike(and surely his/her climate), so this my opinion is only coming from testing those other viscosities. I have noticed much better/smoother gearbox function using by 15W-50 Shell Advance Ultra 4, than others. Also riding style can be one opinion to choose right viscosity.... If you drive short distances with cold engine in cold climate, then 10W-40 can be better, but i use to drive long days with short stops at weekends only with my Ducatis and WELL HEATED engine, so 15W-50 fits much better to me! I hope "U" understand, what i try to explane and why... and surely U can use whatever oil, You want in Your Ducati.

Btw, i think, we have here in Scandinavia "stable dry climate", about +20...+30C at summer months and not so wet weather, what You have in U.K. hole year.... Surely You can drive there around year, not like we here (about 7 months), but we have more dry, than You there! Anyway that 5 moths is very good time to maintain Ducatis here in wintertime... :D

We can ride through the winter but that is normally resevred for the "winter hack bike" rather than the Duc as UK wet weather and UK road salt combine to remove paint and turn fasteners to dust (particularly M1R fork legs!!!!)
UK climate is about the same amount of rain fall in the winter as it is in the summer its just that when it rains in summer more water falls for a shorter time ! :D This time is always the one ride where you forget your waterproofs !!!!!!!!
