just for the others, this is the last in Dutch to thank Mike for his quick translation. after that we return to the common English language.

thanks Mike

Hi guys (and girls),

I've followed the topics about tires over here for a while and a few weeks ago, my tire problem got actual also (cracked front tire).
Just ordered these "halfrings", they should be here somewhere next week. Then putting the 906 on Pirelli.. I certainly curious how the handling will be in compare with the original Michelins

hi dutch 906

i swaped the michelins in sep. 2010 and decided to go for the avon azaro st 45 / 46 zr combination (130 / 70 and 150 / 80). I am not using the halfrings and hence there is not too much room left for chain adjustments.

however, it works perfect, i did 500 km so far and it is really amazing: a much better handling than before / conditions under breaking etc. had really been approved. i did go for this combinations as it has an approval from ducati germany and it is a zr rated matching tire pair.

i will come up with some pictures and additional information with a new thread whenever i find some time. all the best, hardo

Hi Hardo,

Do you have some pictures already ?
I tried the Pirelli's without the halfrings but the tire is too high, will touch the frame. With the halfrings I get enough play to get the wheel in...

best regards,
Rigo

Because some guys are staying in that line that "Paso is made for 16" wheels" and some are looking much better tires and going to 17" conversion.... And to those, who are not so intrested of "look of bike", they surely go to 17" wheels... But they have much better tire options... I can see very clearly after all these years, that here is just 2 different "groups" with this thing... :)

Personally: I like much more look of 750 with 16" wheels, but i am also realist and i have already near all needeed parts to convert my 750 Paso to 17" wheels. Near all parts are from wrecked 907IE. Anyway, i have still 90% condition Michelin's in my Paso, so i stay still in 16", as i make only few kms/year to my 750 Paso/summer. I think, everybody have own opinion in this thing... and i accept such surely 100%  :smoke:

yes two schools of thought on wheel size. two sizes of wheels to choose from! my opinion is 750 and 906 paso should have sixteen inch wheels as designed and this is part of which gives these bikes their unique character. tyre issues can be gotten arround as explained in these threads. if you want 17 inch wheels get a 907 or other ducati. all are great and have their own following and character.  :)

Why aren't you guys going the 180/60-16 route? :?
I too think a Paso belongs on 16" wheels. Here`s a 907ie and from this angle it just doesn`t look right. Specially the rear wheel looks too big. No doubt it may handle better, though. (btw the pic proves that the Contis also fit on a 907ie)
Image
I think the era of 17" wheel conversions on Pasos is about over. The common reason to do this was that there were no tire alternatives which infact always existed. The 150/80-16 is what many go for although the tire is not made for a 5" wide rim. Ducati Germany approved it though. Although it`s a tight fit there`re about no modifications required except for lifting the front fender, a longer chain and turning the rear excenters way back. You lose most of the way to adjust the chain, but there are numerous sports tires in this size.
The 180/60-16 which is a perfect fit for a 5" rim requires spacing out the front and rear sprocket or the chain will hit the tire. Many 180/60s are for heavy tourers, only one or two manufacturers recommend their models for customs, sport tourers etc. one of them being AVON. I chose this option.
While I will stick to the 180 I guess in the longrun the 150/80 will be more popular as you don´t have to machine any new parts.

you're right, perhaps the 907 does'nt look good with its 17" rims, even if I think also Pasos don't look so good with 180/60 16" rear tire.
Too big, too.
P.S. I have the same 2 in 1 Conti on my 907...

true the 180/60 is big but it´s by far not as high as a 150/80.

Hello,

I went the 17inch wheel route - this way I have the same tyres and (almost same) geometry on my Paso and Supersport.

I have tried 120/60-17 with 160/60-17 and will switch the Paso to 120/70-17 to match what I have found works best on the SS.

And I think the 17inch wheels look better :) Looks fine on my bike I think :)

Better details on my conversion here http://forums.ducatipaso.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4272

It was not so simple or probably as cheap as making different 16inch tyres work.......

I do agree the the photo of 907 (above) looks a bit funny - but I think this is more the black rims with black tyres and because it is sitting up on the centre stand!

cheers,

Mick
