Help finding new Starter Sprag

Post by Harry »

So yeh where do i start looking for this part?. I did read on another web-site that the Sprag from a KTM LC4 Motor will fit ( 640cc ?) but my local helpful Ducati / KTM Parts supplier is as about as much use as an Ash Tray on a Motorbike when i contacted him. So yeh help would be much appreciated and any thanks in advance.

G'day Harry
Have you had the engine apart to determine the condition of the sprag clutch? You may want to have a read of these web sites. You might only have to replace the spring at a fraction of the cost of a new sprag.

I've had to do it to mine, just remember to wrap tape around the cams as soon as you get the sprag out.

I replaced the sprag in my 907 with a 900 monster version....a couple of years ago now, but still working well.

Try Ian Gowanloch, or Gowanloch Ducati or Road & Race. There are plenty of places here in Oz that can help you out.

If you get in quick enough though, the $ is still over parity so it may be worthwhile getting one from Bevel Heaven. There are dozens of sites around that will have these.

Cheers.

From my research I found the Ducati part 70140011A corresponded to the KTM part 58440026000. You will read on-line that it goes on backwards for the Ducati. That's easy to see - one side has a left directional arrow the same as the Ducati one (facing you as you look at it when it is in). So, that side is put in the same as the one you take out. There is a KTM circlip you take off the back and I used the original Ducati circlip (thicker) to put it back in.

I ordered mine from http://www.speedaway.co.uk for a total of 66.45 pounds, which included 20 pounds freight. On their site it is under FREE-WHEEL FWD 332008 BLS (58440026000). That was the cheapest I could find to Australia.

You will find various posts which talk of ways to shorten or simply replace the spring - I just wasn't game to try that.

I also ordered a Heat gun (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ws/eBayISAPI ... 0703782254) so I could get that crank shaft bolt off. 20 minutes of heating to do it - for sure it needed that method.

For putting it back together I ordered Loctite 648 from https://www.bolt.com.au/loctite-648-ret ... -7673.html. Also I got a replacement gasket for the alternator cover.

Having put mine in, I found it fixed the clunking noise I had and also the motor turns over correctly for starting :-)

Thanks for the advice everybody. I am just waiting for the Courier to drop my new Sprag off which i ended up getting from Bevel Heaven. Once it arrives it will be time to chill the Beers, break out the Spanners and start throwin them around.
