Water pump replacement

Post by lane1feathers »

G'day all, took Daisy on her first long run after her re build (covered about 600kms) and she didn't miss a beat. Got admiring looks from just about everyone on the road and at the servos. Got a few grumbles since tho, coming from engine somewhere. I initially thought it was from the clutch slave piston mod that I did (bearing failure) but after I took the fairings off it was clearly not coming from that side at all. Noise seems to be coming from water pump. Can anyone please tell me if I need to replace the whole shaft with impeller or if I can get away with just replacing the bearing? If not, does a late model impeller and shaft fit or is it 906 specific? Any advice would be appreciated.
By the way, the clutch mod. using the 900SS slave piston and the roller skate bearing works a treat. I've done 5000kms with it and upon looking at it today it looks like I did it yesterday with no mushroom wear and bearing spins freely (I used NSK cost me $4) for a grand total of $54... I had trouble getting neutral until I bled system properly and got that pesky air bubble out up the top by taking lever off and pointing it at the roof while depressing a bunch of times :D
The CBR600 radiator cap conversion is also working well. Thanks again for that one

Looking at the parts catalogue(s) (TAV.11) you can replace just both bearings.
On the 906 it`s 2x #751202374 (SKF 6001-C3, 12x28x8mm) while on the 907ie it`s a #751202374 and a #70250021A (SKF 6001-2RSH-C3, 12x28x8mm).
It may have been an improvement that on the 907ie they used a sealed bearing with the same measurements (that`s the outer one in the engine cover) instead of two identical (open) ones

Just had a look in the workshop manual to see how to attack water pump issue as I've never done one. It seems there are 2 bearings on the shaft so a cheap NSK fix may be in order (like the clutch bearing) as long as the shaft/impeller are good. Lets hope so. I know the impeller is ok as I had the WP cover off when I did all the hoses and coolant and it looked good. In the spares book it lists these bearings as code no. 751202374. Does anyone know the SKF equivalent? Once I have that I can get an NSK from the bearing dist. in Welshpool for a couple of bucks.
Cheers guys.

they are a day apart :)
Btw the impeller is 906 specific. Not even the one of the 907ie is the same.
