Fitting a RR51 Regulator/Rectifier to a 906 ?

Post by A 9ASO »

I know that there is a huge amount of knowledge out there with all you members and hope that some of you can help me out with this problem that I have.

I have had charging problems and have bought a RR51 from ElectrexWorld but am confused as to how to connect it !!
I assume that my bike has an alternator with 3 output cables (diagram2)
BUT

The original unit has 2x Yellow wires, 2x Red wires, 1x White wire and 1x Black wire.
This connects into the loom by a block where both of the Yellow wires each become Pink;
the first Red becomes a Red with Black line AND an Orange with a Red line;
the second Red continues as a Red cable;
the White becomes a Blue;
and the Black becomes a Brown.

I am affraid that I am very confused about this.

I think that the 2 x Pink wires are from the alternator, together with the Red one?
The Brown appears to be from a fuse and assume that this is replaced by the new Red to the battery ?
The Blue, Red/Black and the Orange/Red appear to all lead to the instrument panel.

Can anyone give me advice on these and what should be connected to which wire.????

Grateful for any advice Guys.

First thing you need to do is check your stator for shorts or opens with an ohmmeter

or the 906 FAQs
Electrex to original wiring
yellow -> both pink (alternator)
yellow -> red (alternator)
white -> light blue (charging warning light)
red -> red/black & orange (battery +)
green -> black (battery -)
(the brown wire of the Paso wiring loom formely going to the regulator is not used any longer)

Note: If the measured voltage between the two yellow wires from the alternator (which are pink when they get to the regulator/rectifier) is between 50-100V you should wire the reg/rect as shown on the first picture of the instructions hence connect yellow 1 from the reg/rect to one yellow(pink) wire from the alternator and yellow 2 to the other. In this case the red wire from the alternator isn`t used and can be isolated. Install like this if the first wiring instructions don`t work. (To check simply connect a voltmeter to the battery. When the engine is started and the regulator/rectifier is connected correctly the voltage will increase i.e. from 12V to ca. 14V)

Thank you very much.

This is just the information that I need.

I assume that the Red/Black and the Orange wires are replaced by the RR51 Red and Green being connected directly to the battery terminals and can therefore be taped up or removed/disconnected?
