Paso 906 mystery

Post by cscarter »

Greetings all, bit new to this forum only joined the other day and I live in the UK, now my reason for joining is I own a 906 Paso, I bought it in 2001 and used it on and off until 2007. Bike was low mileage (km) and in immaculate condition so having other machinery I wrapped it and stacked it in nice warm/dry garage. Now one thing that I've had at the back of my mind was the fact that according to registration doc. it was imported into the UK March 87 and declared manufactured in 87. Now as we all know the 906 was introduced in 88, at the time I wasn't to bothered as it rode well, turned a few heads and sounded the dogs. I have just got it into light of day again and start using it again, one thing I will add, I am the 14th owner since it came into the country so possibly I'm the only one that loved it!

Moving on, the frame number prefix begins P750, so the initial thoughts was that it has been rebuilt as a 906 using a 750 frame, that was the initial thoughts of Gerhard (forum administrator) who obviously knows more than I do and we have swopped many emails this last few days. The strange thing is every thing points toward a real 906 frame, (I have included pictures) the rear grab rail is spaced away from the rear frame, the radiator mountings are original, none of the frame welds have been disturbed, Gerhard tells me the engine is an early one as the position of the clutch slave cyl. There is a manufactures plate riveted to lower left of frame reads - MOTOCICLO DUCATI ZDM750P 0370 88 130 which bares no relationship to the VIN.

So has anybody got the answer or anybody got one the same? Is it a pre-production mule? knowing my luck it's the one they put the crash test dummy on, still that's fitting dummy's about to ride it again.

Regards - CC

I hope you don`t mind if I post the pictures.

Falloon lists the P750 codes but they are 0370 00 XXX and the 906 & 907ie 0019002xx.

G.

PS: do all the 906s with the clutch piston on the right have that blank cover near the sprocket cover?
E3 41R, if it interests anyone shows the compliance to the ECE noise regulation E3 41R. (E3 40R would be a ECE emission regulation)
Frame numbers would normally begin with:
750 Paso ZDM750P…
906 Paso ZDM906PC…
907ie ZDM906PI2…
900 SS ZDM906SC2…
except to the ones with the longer US VIN which begin with ZDM1... (someone correct me if I`m wrong)

Actually with a bit over 1.000 P750s produced the first year your 7505xx frame number would indicate it was manufactured in 1986.

VINs were first used in 1954.[1] From 1954 to 1981, there was no accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats.

In 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States standardized the format.[1] It required all over-the-road-vehicles sold to contain a 17-character VIN, which does not include the letters I (i), O (o), or Q (q) (to avoid confusion with numerals 1 and 0).

Is it the original frame? There have been a few owners along the way. Are the 750/906/907 frames all the same, just with different brackets for the oil coolers or radiators?

Cheers.

Nick.

the 906 frame is unique. It`s shorter as you can see on the first picture. P750 or 907ie frame don`t have those spacers.

This discussion is interesting, I just went down into the garage and at least three of my 88 paso's have the spacer but not the 87. I can't get to the storage unit right now but remember that another one has the spacers that is also a 88. I haven't picked up my 906 yet so can't check it out. Wonder what changed from year to year that would require the spacers? Arch.

I don't think your '750' frame number is anything unusual. My 906 frame is numbered 000755 and as the other have said, each Paso variant has its own particular feature. If yours was a converted 750 you would know.

JW I`m sure before 000755 there`s not ZDM750P stamped on your 906.

Send an email to Ducati, they will sort out the mistery as they hold all the records.

I bet that if it is an early one they had the chassis # already registered way before so they could play with the production numbers, to make the books look better.

An exhample is my 907ie which part of the first 500 units manufactured , first registerd in 1991, but when I enquiried, it was confirmed the prodution as early as 1989 which allowed me to get the road tax exempion (Italian registered)
