DUCATI PASO 907 IE MIRRORS.

Post by englishstiv »

Well peeps I have just seen a left side mirror (in bits) sell for £200.00 - yes two hundred pounds today on the British (UK) ebay site which personally I consider to be just way over the top...........why?

Well I have had a good look at my own one and reckon that for half a similar price I could fabricate a mould out of fibre glass and then reproduce a fairly close if not exact copy of the body which will then just need a mirror, plastic lens, electrics and studs to finish.

I appreciate that these are not going to be the real thing but I reckon if they are fetching that kinder price then there must be a way of getting a list of how many units are required and getting a small fabrication shop to maybe set up a plastic mould for a small run of say 40 left and right bodies. ( If they ended up costing £50.00 each that would be £4,000 for 80 mirrors which is surely worth a clear bit of profit)

So here is the rub - How many of you out there really need a set?

I actually need a right one as mine is missing and was when I purchased the bike so I am also looking for an old unit to fabricate or buy.

Also are the 906 and 750 mirrors the same?

If needs be I will investigate further - are any of you interested?

regards

Stiv

I've been thinking of doing this exact thing over the last 6-12 months. I have another Paso project waiting to be assembled, and I need both mirrors for it.

Not only was I thinking of making a mold and manufacturing a couple of mirrors, but I've been keeping an eye out for any type of readily available yellow lenses that may be custom fit into it and still look good. I've been looking at crs, trucks, motorcycles, basically anything with yellow lenses, and can't find anything, yet, that would look decent. I had thought about a single, flat, 20mm x 50mm rectangular amber lens or a clear lens with yellow bulbs, if it can be molded into the housing and still look good.

:)

I just bought two sets of plastic front turn signal lenses from my local Ducati shop, who had them shipped in from Austraila. I'm pretty sure they are still available from the factory.

A year or two ago I made a couple of posts here suggesting that we should try to locate the original Paso moulds for the front turn signal and mirror pods, which are probably sitting on a shelf somewhere in Italy, and which would probably be free for the asking, as a first step towards ensuring a continueing supply of these much-needed items.

I have emailed Ducati in Italy regarding purchase of the moulds and have also asked for the relavant specifications regarding the mirrors - no reply as of yet - I will be pestering them.

I have also spent some time at my local Ducati agent today delving into their spares availability and computer numbers etc. The full mirror (either side) for the 1992 Paso 907IE onwards was slightly different from the pre 1992 model ( by how much we couldn't ascertain if any - maybe just a michro fiche number difference??)

In the UK the complete mirror new would sell for £129.00 at Ducati Prices. This is now an out of stock item and cannot be ordered or delivered in the UK.

Which also means that if we assume that price as a top end valuation for the job lot then 40 mirrors either side would retail at £10,320 - silly money if you ask me.

I am now checking a few UK companies that make plastic mouldings and will let folk know what occurs.

If any one is already on this case then let me know as I don't want to waste a load of time only to be told it's already been done.

I am also doing this on an assumption that if it does happen then I just want to cover my costs.

If you are interested in a set of mirrors then please add your name and let other Paso folk know please realise it will be numbers that make this happen.

regards

Stiv.

Good stuff, Stiv!

I think we've got quite a bit of ground to cover before we know whether or not we can produce these at a price people can afford. The first thing is to see if we can lay our hands on the moulds.

Actually I was told that such stuff was available as an aftermarket optional for pasos... "once upon a time, many and many years ago...."
