Another potential 907 owner

Post by Jaffa »

Howdy all, have been trawling through this site for potential problems with a '91 907 I have my eyes on.
Have seen the electric problems, can live with those.
Have seen the headlight issue, seems a reasonable fix for the dual setup.

The bike I am looking at has Termi pipes and has been chipped accordingly, approx 45k on the clock which doesnt seem a lot given the age of the bike, (footpeg rubbers are apparently worn but not too much).

Oh, its about 5,000kms from me so will be riding her home if the deal goes ahead.

Your input appreciated.

Jaffa.

5000 km on a newly purchased 907IE ??

Well you certainly will have learned all the problems by the time you get it home!

I wouldn't be without mine but that is a long way.

Ahhh, the question, yes get to the point.

Well, I would really like to know of any other major issues that I should be looking out for, specifically for the 907. The age of the bike aside. What about the fuel injection system? Shocks? Frame issues?

...just my opinion...but then, everybody's entitled to MY opinion....

the fuel injection system is a bit of a dinosaur at nearly 17 years old...
it is an "open" type (no sensors in the exhaust) - and so not too complicated...BUT does have a few finnicky features...

the TPS must be set up accurately
the throttle balance must be set by a magician
some bikes are prone to a misfire at cruise (there is a very long thread on this anomaly)

my advice would be to ride the bike for a while PRIOR to your big trip.
the ergonomics of the 907ie aren't conducive to 1,000 kms per day riding; unless your pillion is a chiropractor I'd look at (say) 5 hours in the saddle maximum.

I often equate my 907 ownership to being like having a super-model for a girl friend; nice to play with, not very useful and a lot of maintenance...
My 907ie reminds me often of a picture of a hot woman with the line under "No matter how good she looks, someone, somewhere is sick of putting up with her shit".

I also have a Duc 900SS; of the two Ducatis I'd have to say the SS is the rider's bike - the 907ie is more a pose-value for cafe cruises. I don't consider it a serious tourer. [I have owned an XS1100 and rode that from Melbourne / Cairns / Tennant Creek / Adelaide / Melb..so yes, I have done some touring...

best of luck with your purchase.

Well, this is it...I have decided to take the plunge.

I have had a mechanic (car) friend look over the bike for me...and he cant fault it.

Compression tests have been done 120psi on the rear pot, 123psi on the front. She is charging at 14.3v at 3,500rpm, I will check threats here to see if these are all within range. I have a phone number of the previous workshop that has serviced the old girl so will give them a call too.

47k on the clock for a '91 model bike I dont think is a lot, hope its all original.

The dealer sent me a heap of digi photos and she looks great...probably decided to purchase her on looks and passion rather that the head...but what the hell, we only live once.

Now if only I could figure out how to post them on here.

Time to ponder the excesses of life and have a beer.

Brisbane....here I come.
I must be bloody crazy.

I did that 3x in the past (knowing I might have to put some work in it) and I never regreted it :)

to post pictures here, get a free photobucket.com account, upload your pics (ideal is 640x480 to 800x600size) and then post the direct link here after you clicked on [IMG] on top of your editing field.
so it`s:

Hi Laddie, just woke from my winter hibernation.
On the matter of the 907, you will be suprised as to how tourable they are ,though tackling the Nulla what a bore takes some courage, let us all know how you go,
you will luv that bike.

Well, the deal is done,...fly to Brisbane on Monday night to get my new (old) Duke.

Its been a while since I owned one, but the time has come to make this one my own. Previously owned an '82 900S2 and a '93 900SS, both beautiful bikes....

Keep your eyes open..I will be passing through four other states on my way home to WA...I will be the guy with the shiny red '91 907ie and the bloody big smile.

Cheers for the encouragement..

Jaffa,

after seeing the bike I can only say you've done very well...
it runs well and looks in "pristine" condition...was great to park them together at the cafe.
I like your Termis more than my Staintunes and think yours might even sound better.

I told you they were a head-turner.

keep it upright (well, at least on the tyres); look forward to your reports on your trip thru to Perth.

cheers mate!!

As soon as the bike shop started here up....I was hooked. The Termi's barked into life and I was writing a cheque.

It was great to catch up with Laddie while I was on the Gold Coast and to see two beautiful 907's on the road and parked up while drinking coffee was fantastic.

I have made it to Sydney...had a smile on my face for a thousand k's I reckon. She handled like a dream the whole way down the coast. Plenty of looks from those I passed...not too many passed me. She has a cut down seat which I find very comfortable.

No drama with any part of the bike whatsoever. Having said that, the clutch is as I remember on my old 900ss. Requires a little feel at times to stop some slip. She also is prone to that misfire at low speeds when hot...but this disappears when at highway speeds.

Anyway, I should be posting these snippets on a different thread so will do so from now on.

I have a few weeks here on the East Coast then back to Western Australia....

It will take a while for me to get the grin from my face.

Jaffa...... :D
