ST/SS wheels fit a 907ie?

Hi folks,

Anyone know if those gray 5 spoke oem Marchesinins that come with ST2, ST4 and 800SS/1000SS models will bolt onto a '93 907? I've looked closely at photos of both wheel versions, and the brake carrier holes seem to match but there's no way of my guessing about the axle diameters/lengths or spacer requirements. Any real world experience on this? The fact that I've never found a google photo of this swap makes me think it can't be done for some reason. I hope I'm wrong 'cause I like that 5 spoke look!

thanks!

The ST wheels have 25mm axles back and front. I think they could be made to fit with the correct bearings and spacers where necessary. They also use a different speedo drive so you'd probably have to make same changes there, or perhaps you could use the ST drive if the ratio is the same.

Early SS and Monster wheels use the 17mm axles which are easy to swap out, but trying to use a wheel with a 25mm axle in a 17mm suspension will require some tricks to say the least. Not an easy swap. I just put a new Sport Classic wheel (25mm axle) on a 1990 Sport swingarm, (17mm) and there was some lathe work, and some mill work and special parts made, and a mix of parts from different years, etc. In short, if I let a shop mechanic change my tire, It is unlikely he will get it back together right. It works, and looks right on the bike, but I spent a lot of time making that damn wheel fit and line up right. Not a simple thing, but can be done.
One of the big challenges is that if you have bearing that is made for 17mm axle, the width is different than a bearing made for a 25mm axle, even though the outside diameter is the same. So the spacing in the forks or swingarm are now different. It gets complicated quickly.

Cheers, Phil
