M1R Fork rebuilds

Can anyone recommend a specialist to strip, hard chrome and rebuild my 907 forks in the UK? I got the bike recently which had been in storage with heavily rusted stanchions. I tried riding it but both fork seals were destroyed within a couple of miles, unsurprisingly.

Many thanks.

While I have no experience with any suspension shop specially not in the UK, there`s for example http://www.pittedforks.co.uk

Thanks for this. Alternatively, new stanchions are available for the 906 but I don't know if they are the same as the 907 stanchions ?

These guys are the go to blokes for Paso forks they can also adapt and alter the internals for you, they were back in the day quite reasonably priced too although I used them for something non Paso related.

I would always prefer re-chroming over a set of (mostly non originals) new stanchion tubes.
Quality and dimension wise it's a better choise and also price wise (count on approximately £160-£200 incl. aligning for a set of tubes).
There are a lot of replica's but regularly they have deviant length, inner dimensions, lack of wholes etc.

Have done it a few times ..... 9 out of 10 times it's better than new (although the original Marzocchi M1R chrome is also very good).

Good luck!

Frank

the answer would be no but they may still work assuming the inner dimensions of the fork legs are the same which they probably are. The internal parts of the 906 & 907ie forks have identical part numbers.
I couldn`t find any info about the length of the right stanchion tubes but the left one of the 907ie is 640mm, the one of the 906 is 630mm (and the one of the P750 is 580mm). So if you lower the fork in the triple trees a little it should work. Of course being a centimetre shorter you`d also need shorter fork springs.

Nice to see someone is doing this. I searched a few years back, and could find nobody in the States that would do it. Ended up finding new legs, which weren't cheap.
Let us know what he quotes you for a set of legs. I might pay the post from California to have them done.

Cheers, Phil

The company I am using is called DYNASURF in the U.K. They arrange collection and return. Price to check straightness, straighten if necessary, grind and hard chrome is GBP135 for the pair plus VAT. They are a large company who specialise in industrial / heavy plant hydraulic cylinders, oil & gas, aerospace etc. Motorcycle fork stanchions are a sideline. Surface hardness is important but so is surface finish. Too highly polished means the seals will run dry and be destroyed very quickly. Too rough is good for oil retention and lubricating the seals but won't please the MOT tester....

HI RB. Have you had the forks back yet? If so, how would you rate the work that was done? I have two sets I need re-chroming. Cheers

Forks not back yet but should be by the middle of the week. I will let you know and post photos, if I can figure out how too... Not had much luck with photbucket....

Bought the new fork seals from the BMW people "Motor Works" - £27.70 for the set with postage.

Got the new timing belts and will try the guitar tuning app on my Windows phone for tensioning. Apparently I need 100 to 110 Hz which is Piano key No.24, or halftone between A2 and G2 :-)
