engine cases

Post by a330us »

Hi Guys, I was just wondering if Paso's and 907 engine cases were alined bored at the factory before assembly. I was looking at a 907 that had suffered the old front sprocket trick of coming loose and cracking the case which had been welded. Is this a good fix or is it possible to stick a good left side case on the engine without major alignment problems. Thanks Arch.

The outer case with the alternator stator is usually not a problem but the crankcase halves should always be replaced as a pair.

Both of my engines (one is a spare) side cases appear to have been repair welded due to sprocket /chain damage and are as solid as a rock, no seepage or warping so obviously if the job is done properly there should not be an issue.

Thanks English but just sent it back to the seller couple of days ago so I'm out the shipping costs to me but he refunded shipping back to him and purchase price which was pretty much top dollar. Just pissed me off that he is a "guru" and failed to mention the damage which as you pointed out done correctly is fully functional but I would never have sold it to someone without disclosing this feature.
I've been stung a couple of times last 6 months on this type of selective memory! Maybe it's time to take up surf fishing or something in my doddering years! Regards Arch.

Gee Arch,
are you still buying 907's :)
As mentioned here, I have had my alternator side cover welded to repair a crack.
Was welded on the inside of the cover and machined so no oil weeps thru the crack. A lot of skilled welders around town.

Hi Bryon, Yeah can't help myself but this bike had both the alt cover welded and the engine case and was kinda chewed up around the sprocket area so pretty good damage all around. Arch.
