Just keep that Paso alive!

Post by jcslocum »

As moderator of the site, I don't want to impose any rules or regulation on members. In particular rules that can't be enforced or would make some feel un-welcome. To try and get members to correct their posts or make them post a certain way is impossible and I won't do it. Even in the USA there is regional differences in the lauguage that we can't understand!

We have a global membership and to reverse your complaint around, it wouldn't be fair or reasonable for me to ask you to fix your post so that the english used is more accurate. We have members that post in languages other than english and they get their answers.

If anyone has an issue understanding a post or word, please just ask and don't be offended.

If you can't tolerate the way the site is used by it's members, I regret that it doesn't work for you.

Really, I think a moderator could impose rules and regulations to the members.
At least, when some member employs unappropriate words or offends another member.
Unfortunately, such things have happened here, too.

Here in Italy, it's the same. So, as in an Italian forum I would'nt employ my regional language, I think it would be appreciated by everybody a plain and clear "standard" English.

Here, I fully agree with you.
I think everybody has to be helpful each other, without feeling offended.
And, above all, nobody has to leave the forum for a such problem.

Well, if some discussions start being too harsh I personally do pm one or the other guy saying to take it easy. There`s not much more that can be done.
I don`t think the language barrier is an issue, not even the use of abbreviations. It`s rather the way some answer if it`s then asked to explain. Same if newbies who just don´t know better ask something that can easily be found in the FAQs.

Something more could be done if the harshness keeps on or begins hardest.

But, that's not the point.

I think the common sense needs to guide our acts and... our writings.
So as I would never write in my regional language on an Italian forum, I think every member of the forum has to do its best to make understand its thought to all the members of the forum.

Thinking a little, little bit to the people who does'nt speek its language and without pointless ironies or so.

Higgy,

You crack me up!

Obviously, we moderate out what should not be posted here. In 10 years I think I have deleted 2-3 posts for bad content. Not just stupid spammers.

Being from the US I enjoy the fact that the site has posts from all around the world!

I enjoy the differences in the "English" language that is used here, especially from the guys down under. No where else do I get to read English where I see words that I recongnize and I still don't understand most of what is said, but eventually I get it.
I have a friend in Germany where his job is to translate English to German and back for his company. He tells me that almost all international business is done using the English language much like air traffic controllers at airports.
I'm fine with it. I surely don't think less of someone because of the English used on this site. I enjoy it ya'll (figure that one out).

From garzantilinguistica.it
madrelingua

Definizione
s.f. (lingua madre) mother tongue, native tongue, native language: è di - inglese, his mother tongue is English ♦ s.m. e f. (chi parla la propria lingua d'origine) native speaker: è un - inglese, he is a native speaker of English ♦ agg. (che parla la propria lingua d'origine) mother tongue: insegnante - cercasi, mother-tongue teacher required (o native speaker sought as teacher).
However, I prefer the daughter tongue instead of the mother one
