Oil Level Sight Glass

Post by Desmo_Demon »

One of the many things wrong with my Paso is that the sight glass for checking the oil level is cracked and leaking. I have set out to replace this part, but Ducati has discontinued it some time ago (part #066049183). According to the parts diagram, it is the same part as the ignition timing sight glass (also discontinued), but there is a difference between them. The oil level sight glass has a reflector, but the ignition timing glass does not.

I have set out to find a replacement, but am having difficulties in the great land of non-metric parts. I have been able to find a replacement with appropriate dimensions, but it is made of plastic and not good for temperatures above 160-degrees F (71-degrees C). I found another with all the correct dimensions and temperature rating, except for one dimension......it is an M33 x 1.5 thread instead of the necessary M35-1.5 thread.

Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone out there may have some leads on a replacement sight glass.

These are the dimensions that I've gotten for the part...

paso750 (Gerhard) has pointed out that a person is selling some on eBay out of the Netherlands, but I'm a cheap bastard and don't want to spend $50 USD plus international shipping for the part (at least not yet). The ones that I have been finding that "almost" work are in the $6-$18 USD range, so I'll pursue this a little bit longer until I give up.

Here's the auction that Gerhard found earlier...

Oil level sight glass, mine has been leaking for several years, currently I have come to believe the best I can do is find a salvage shop that will sell the cluth cover with the glass in place, I have a shop in CA looking for one today.

I've been looking into making an M35 x 1.5 to M27 x 1.5 reducing bushing to adapt a sight glass that I found in an M27-1.5 thread. I've also been thinking of making a small "V" notch on the cracks in the lens and filling them with a clear epoxy to try to stop the leaking.......I'm still researching alternatives. :D

Oil Site glass Idea

Post by RADDUCK »

Just an Idea... You said the only difference between the Magneto side and the dipstick side was the reflector. If yours is cracked what if you salvaged the reflector from it and installed it on the good plug from the magneto side. Or just skipped the reflector all together. Scribe in some marks and check your oil with a flashlightThen you could source an appropriate threaded plug for the magnato side, & add a rubber oring. Just pull the magneto plug when doing valve adjustments.

The reflector would have to be cut out, since it is plastic welded into place. I'm thinking of just switching the two, for now, since the ignition timing glass is not submerged in oil, so the cracked one will not cause any problems in that location.
