Hi Piero,
you have to open the engine to see what happened.
I don't think you'll need to change the whole engine...
Probably, you only need to change some gear or some gearshift fork.
No matter, nobody can tell you something without seeing the damages into the engine.
Good luck  !

Remove left engine cover and see if shift mechanism is OK.

begin with draining the oil.
If you want to remove the left cover, remember you'll need an extractor to pull the generator bearing off the crankshaft (the one under the small cover).
have a nice ride, Nicola

Did you tighten the chain??

Check the output shaft bearing that the front sprocket is mounted on. Wiggle the shaft to see if it moves. I blew up an output bearing and it had a similar type of feel.

Couldn't you shift the gear, too?

It started out by popping out of gear and then wouldn't shift into gear. This all happened very quickly, within 2 miles. I thought I have broken the sprocket or chain at first.

I know it sounds crazy but did you check the fluid resevoir for the clutch???? I just experienced a problem with mine where it got low and one day it started doing the craziest things, clunking , clanging , lurching, jerking, horrible noised and I thought for sure the engine was toast. I spent several hours trying to figure out the problem before checking the clutch fluid. Of course I knew that wasnt the problem but I filled it and bled the system anyway and much to my suprise It was back to normal. With the symptoms it had I would never have thought in a million years that it could have been something that simple. good luck John

Piero,
as our friends told, you can try something more, before opening the engine.
So, if the engine would run well in neutral, could only be a clutch problem...

Piero,
