Sorry guys i miss posted Spark problem on my 907
Symptoms,
I have the computer old one now in front of me. Non of the components seem burnt or broken. It looks brand new. What i wanted to tell you is that the bike sparks when i turn the key. The spark plugs are out and when i turn the key they all spark like crazy not always but 4 times out of 5. Any ideas?
Is it a coil problem
Is it a relay Problem
Is it a kill Switch Problem
Is the Chip in my computer bad?
Non of the resistor in computer look burnt or worn everything is shiny new and still has the oil coating all over.
Im lost please help...
Oh and disregard the last post about no spark Sorry.

Maybe obvious, but have you tried w new set of plugs?
And in your Computer wanted thread you say it`s unridden f over a year,
fresh gas would be something to test.
Did it work OK before it was stored?

Just a wild guess but sounds like a crank sensor wiring problem. Multiple sparks suggest an intermitant signal to the computer from the sensor. Best to start at the beginning. check all the wiring between the computer, coils and crank sensor Make sure all is clean and making good contact. Do you have and know how to use a dvom? If so a voltage drop test of the wiring should pinpoint the problem quickly.

There's no problem so bad that a little fixing can't make it worse! : )

Re: Sorry guys i miss posted Spark problem on my 907
yes it ran perfect after i put new cans on it but i was in germany on business and when i came back 1 yea later to florida the bike wouldnt start. It cranked and coughed and i took it to a shop they pulled it apart and stated the computer was proably bad because when they turn the key and plugs are out they all just spark????? wierd
So maybe the CPS is miswired?

Any shop around w 90´s Weber-Marelli diagnostic tester & Ducati error codes?
To eliminate basic errors in the injection system.
Otherwise always good to check wirng as stated above.

Re: Sorry guys i miss posted Spark problem on my 907
I think Higgy is close on the money - but no cigar...
my guess is the two timing sensors are plugged incorrectly.
the crank sensor counts two lugs per revolution
the timing sensor counts 48 teeth per rev of the countershaft [actually - it looks for an index but will count the teeth if plugged wrong]
the sensors appear identical and it wouldn't be hard to mix them up...resulting in too many sparks per revolution.
refer wiring diagram
33 Timing sensor plugs to points 5 & 23 of the ECU
[colour code GrBk(GreyBlack) and O(Orange)]
34 Revolution number sensor plugs to points 3 & 4 of the ECU
[colour code VBk(VioletBlack) BY(BlueYellow)
my guess is that the ECU might not like to be told it's doing 20,000 RPM...and maybe that's why sometimes it doesn't fire until it's "re-set".
just a guess...

wow you guys are great . would any body have a picture of the two crank sensors so i have a general idea im more or less a noob.
Thanks so much will try to rewire the sensors

thanks for the pic. That helps. But also any pics of where it is on the bike:?: i do not know the ducati so well yet. But the saying is right ducati does make you a mechanic.
Cheers

Re: Sorry guys i miss posted Spark problem on my 907
the sensors are both on the left hand side (if you're sitting on the bike)
one is on the side casing - just above the crank shaft; it points down at a slightly forward angle
the other is on the side casing toward the front of the engine near the water pump; it points in toward the countershaft
...just trace the leads back to the plugs.
mark the leads with tape so you don't get them mixed up if you do un-plug them and check the wiring colours as per above.
do NOT remove the sensors from the bike
the sensors run a very fine air gap between the tip and the timing lugs; if you screw up the replacement gap the lug can hit the sensor and break it.
if you are a "newbie" I suggest you leave this to the experts...
also DO NOT crank the bike over if the spark is not there...even intermittantly
the zapps might go somewhere else "very expensive" if your earth is dodgy [ignitors or even ECU]

Re: Sorry guys i miss posted Spark problem on my 907
This is not for newbies....If you have a known good crank sensor and an old quick start soldering gun you can easily verify your ignitions function. Be sure to disable your fuel supply. All you have to do is hold the tip of the soldering gun near the crank sensor and your ignition should fire. The ac current of the soldering tip will induce a current in the sensor and your ignition will fire if its still functioning. This of course assumes all the wiring is good.Quickest way I know to check your ignitor.
just food for thought. could possiibly save a few hundred bucks along your way..............to that perfect corner.
