my reservoir tank has oil in it!!!

Post by desmobug »

I'd posted earlier that my oil light was turning on and clearing itself, my boyfriend and I were taking the body off and I noticed the liquid in the reservoir tank was thick, turned out to be oil, so now we're going to take the engine apart and check the head gasket..

My bike is a 1993 907 IE with a 944 big bore kit in it, do I need a special kit? any ideas where a good place is to get the kit?

Thanks,

Desmobug

You don`t have a head gasket, only cylinder.
No special kit needed f a 944.

If U take out heads from sylinders, then U also need new O-rings to oil/waterlines (between head and sylinder). They have to replaced! I have fighted some times with those o-rings, cause leaking there, but my cooling liquid and oils havent mixed, only leaking from front sylinder(allways front in my case!) Those o-rings have to be from such material, like "viton"(FPM, or was it FMP?),that they can resist cooling liquid and oil. Normal o-rings DONT FIT at all !!!!

Been there, done that. I have a 92 907 with 50,000 miles on it. I have pretty much been through all kinds of issues. The oil in the reservoir tank is coming from the seal on the back side of the water pump, that's right, the water pump. Check it out, the water pump has a seal on the shaft that connects to the gear set in the left side of the engine. When you take off the left engine side cover, the end of the water pump shaft engages with the same gear set that the starter and cam drive shaft are connected to.
Anyway, there is not a head gasket, it is a metal to metal seal. The cylinder has a raised metal ridge and the head has a recess it fits in, no gasket. There are o-rings for the oil and water to pass through but the pressures are not enough for the oil to blow by its o-ring and then penetrate the water passage's 0-ring to mix with the water/anti-freeze. You would notice the oil leaking on the outside where the head meets the cylinder. There is however alot of oil slung around inside the side cover and it can get through the water pump drive shaft seal, so says the Ducshop in Atlanta. They just rebuilt my engine, balanced, blue-printed, heads polished, valves and guides, man it runs sweet. I was also getting oil in my anti-freeze. I pulled my heads 5 times myshelf, had two shops do the same thing and it never fixed the oil leak, until Ducshop rebuilt the engine. I have pictures of the o-rings, cylinder heads, etc if you need them.

I started a post about this subject a while ago.

http://forums.ducatipaso.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2444

The damage to the engine is quite similar to that described in this post

http://forums.ducatipaso.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2706

so check the oil level before you ride your machine or..... BOOM!
