Swing freeplay?

Post by Tamburinifan »

Had mine on centerstand to remove rear wheel.
When I was about to loosen wheel bolt, I felt a freeplay up-down, about 2mm at the bolt, small but obvious freeplay, whole swing moving.

No part of the rear suspension linkage seemed to have any freeplay, neither on top nor bottom.
Is this normal, can`remember having this before? :(
What can be worn, any bushings on swing bolt?
I haven`t checked any manual yet, just home from garage & working early tomorrow.

Hi Tamburini,

I've noticed the same amount of play and in my case it looks like the pivot of rockers on the frame side has some play.
so far I didn't take apart the system. I gonna do this in a few weeks.
If I discover some worthwhile to tell, I'll let you know.

...I hate to be the prophet of doom...but if there is freeplay while the bike is on the centre-stand most likely the freeplay will be increased in the ride height position.
this is where most component wear occurs...

the real test of swing arm free play is with the suspension disconnected and at about 30mm from botom of stroke height.

Don't worry about it, just go to your local independent bearing specialist and order:
4 x HK2020 Needle bearing, 1 x HK 2030 Needle bearing and 6 x G20x26x4 Seal. These are the suspension linkage not the swingarm bolt bearings and most likely to go.
Its the best thing to do and then you can tell if it is the suspension unit bushes. After a long period of ownership it expected to replace these bearings.

And this means that what part is worn? Suspension unit mount bushes?
Tried to check that but upper part of shock did not seem to moved when I yanked swing.

So I should take the linkage apart to check for wear?

Hi Gert,

disassembling the hole system is not necessary, I think.
when you loosen all the bolts in the system, you probably get a pretty good idea about the condition of the parts when you yank the swingarm up and down.
the rose joints in the shock normally last very long.
