Are 3 ohm coils really what we in the Duc world need? If so, those buggers are all over the place in the Harley world!

Beardo,

3 Ohm is what our beloved Ducati's need. and yes there are lots of them in Harley world. I bought a set myself from one of these guys. haven't mounted them yet. planned to this during the winter.

Will it work without modifying the airbox? As I remember on the Supersport 91-97 model the hight and mounting need a special metal plate as the mounting holes do not line out properly otherwise the coils are too high or too low and interfear with the frame or airbox.

Hi Olaf,

you probably have to make an adaptor plate. the coil are on the left side of motor and not under the tank.
€ 150 is too expensive. you have to add duty's, VAT and shipping. this brings the price near the € 200 mark.
in comparison, I payed € 121 for a brandnew set incl. all other costs a while ago. bought them from a Harley guy in the States. there seem to be an alternative for these Dyna coil, but I've no idea about the quality.
Maybe one of our States-based members can shine a light on this.

Do you mean an off brand named coil, made by Dyna? Not sure what you mean. Brian

Hi Brian,

No, I don't think it's brand of Dyna.
I'll try to find the lead and come back to you.

Got the coils for 52 Euro using a ebay sniper auction programm.
That is a nice price to my opinion as I discussed some 70 Euro's for a used set from a Dutch Ducati Club member some year ago.
Think of fitting them on my SuperSport 900 SSC Carb, making a mounting plate will be no problem using some alu plating I have left.
Wonder if I need new sparkplug cables for that as well. Cooling on the rear of the airbox would be no problem I guess using the 3 Ohm coils.
If it function well I'll see if I can find a set for the 907. No hurry there.

Leaves me with the question on the double headlight as more and more parts seem to be getting available. See that topic as I asked for some advice. . . http://forums.ducatipaso.org/viewtopic. ... 1&start=15

Hey guys, seen you have been commenting on that topic during the weekend. . . . Thanks a lot!

Could it be listed in the Kemna Catalogue?

Or did you vision the smaller Dyna coils looking like this;

Next set for sale in the US 3 Ohm Dyna, seems the iron core is shorter

52 Euros for new Dynacoils is not bad :)
The connectors of the Dyna coils are different ones. They require small ring terminals.
I don`t know if you can remove the sparkplug cables from the original coils. However Dynateck sells diy cables. You shorten them and then crimp on one connector.
Dynacoils have one mounting hole on one side of the core and two on the other so those coils in the second ebay auction may have been shortened.

Bertus, do you mean these ones ?

regarding heat you may want to keep an eye on that. It can differ from bike to bike. I can tell that on a 900 Elefant the Dynas become quite warm, while on other Ducs it`s different. That may depend on the wiring and ignition system, I don`t know.

Here`s a set of 5 ohm Dyna coils

I`m wondering about actual Harley coils. Most of them have two power terminals and two sparkplug cable terminals.
On the other side there`re Harley coils with 2 negative and one positive power connector so these could be two coils in one housing, hence may work on a Duc as well. I.e.

Just being curious. Where`re the Harley experts ... ?

EDIT: From what I understand now original Harley coils are "dual fire", meaning on a Harley the spark fires on both cylinders at the same time - an odd solution ... "Single fire" coils fire the cylinders seperately.
