It suddenly stops !!! Input needed

Post by duske »

Hi.

Some time ago my 906 PASO just stopped. Pulled in and it started again with no problems so i didn't do anything about it, but yesterday it stopped 5 times on 10 km.

It just suddenly stops - total dead. One time i was running 120 km/t on the highway and then suddenly no power - total dead....

All i have to do to get it started is to pull in to the side and start it again, and then it is going again. :?: :?:

I have tested the following :
- all connectors cleaned
- new sparkplugs
- new fuel filter, checked the fuel pump
- The voltage says 13,4 volt so the battery should be ok.
- Checked the fuses
- Checked the ignition system, sensor, coils....

I'm going on a trip this weekend and i'm a bit concerned that it will happen again. It is running perfect right now.

Any input for tests would be great. I havn't found any problems on the thing i have tested so the problem must still be there.

For your info i have just changed that stator, generator, olie switch....

HELP !!!!!

This doesn't happen at about siesta time does it ? :D Check the connecter to the rh handle bar switch .... operating the kill sw cuts power to the magic box....maybe a bad connection there :) and make sure all the fuses are in tight and are clean
I wish I was young again............Id be heaps smarter than last time

although I`m with Hamish and Steve, I`d still like to throw in some other options.
If you recently sealed the tank are the return line and the breather line of the tank still free ? Sealant could have clogged them.
When did the problem start, before or after you sealed it ?

I have seen the problem before the seal'ing but both lines are free.

To be sure i didn't seal the top because I was afraid that is would stop the lines so it is ok.

But thanks...

Might me something electric.

I would consider borrowing another ECU and see if the problems persists.

The old Digiplex is not really suitable for the dukes, too much vibration and sometimes the components get damaged (brak causing false contacts). There is also an Eprom, that also sometimes is fitted on "sockets" instead of being soldered and can get loose.

Check also the vacuum pipes (the ones that go the the ECU) in case they are blocked or cracked.

The last thing is the wiring, I had a similar issue on a P750 I was restoring and after several tests (and burned Digiplex :banghead: ) i discovered the KEY SWITCH was causing false contacts internally and therefore it was basically resetting the ECU and shutting down the engine.

Electrics aside, check the pump, sometimes with the old worn ones they can stop and cause fuel starvation (but in this case the problem would not be "sudden").

I went on the trip and after 200 km the engine stopped and locked.

I think the problem here is in the generator, and this somehow has blocked the stator. The bike is located in a barn in Sweeden right now, but I will come back with some updates as soon as i get it back and examine the engine.

mmmm

some times the Generator rotor comes loose, that could be the reason... start removing the generator cover (need to drain the Oil first) then if that is the issue you should find all the pieces there.

don't worry about draining the oil you won't loose much, catch it ain a pan, will require you drain the coolant
Most likely the stator is shot and the regulator

You have only got yourself to blame. Who in their right mind would start a 200km+ ride with a motorcycle that had cut out 5 times the previous ride? *Note* When the Ducati develops a fault you don't ride it again until the fault is found. Good luck fixing it... spares are difficult to find this century.
