Penske 8981 shock

I was wondering if any Penske 8981 shock can be adapted to fit a 750 Paso even if it was made for another sport bike? What is the difference between an 8981 shock on an SV650 or say a GSXR750? Is it just the spring weight, or is the overall length different as well? Also, does anyone know the length for the stock Marzocchi shock eye to eye? Is it 13 3/4"? I really don't want to spend $725 on a new one when I could get one off of ebay used for $300-$500. I really don't plan on entering Moto GP next season and am therefore really not interested in a racing shock, but thats all thats available. Any input is appreciated as it looks like my Marzocchi can't be rebuilt since they are giving the dealer the run around on getting the neccessary seal, so I guess into the dumpster it goes. I also found that Ohlins made an Ohlins model #DU5085 back in the nineties that they of course no longer produce.

Call one of the bigger suspension shops, and ask 'em. I had Stig Pettersen of PPS rebuild and convert my Ohlins 900ss shock to fit my Duc 748. It can be done, but it isn't cheap! Stig quoted me $200, and then, 5 days before I absolutely had to have it (for the AMA Pro Thunder race at Daytona), he doubled the price. At that point I had no options, and had to pay him.

I wouldn't have done it to only save $200 or so, had I known.

If I was home, I'd check to see if a Showa from a 748-996 would fit; those things are seriously cheap on eBay, and a decent shock. I've got 3 of 'em in my parts room! But I'm on a ship right now, if you ask me in 2 months, I'll give it a try and report back!

Nick, don't forget to post what you find out about adapting a shock! When I got my Paso I had a ton of questions, and nothing was more frustrating than finding a thread that dealt with my problem, and then no final resolution on the issue... There is so much knowledge among the people in this group, and it's great when we all work together to share it!

If your shock needs only new gaskets, I don't think it will be a problem.
The refurbishment will be cheaper than the buy of another one.
Besides, since you have the Marzocchi Duo unit, you can see this kit in eBay http://cgi.ebay.it/Ducati-PASO-906-Marz ... dZViewItem.
I have bought it for my 907 ie and there are the bearing and all the gaskets.
I think that the 906 and the 750 Marzocchi shock would be the same, but I can't be sure.

I have found a shop http://www.ducati-gowanloch.com/ in Australia that has new complete shocks and am going with that option. It'll cost me $200 shipped. It is my understanding that the shock on the 750 Paso is unique and only the kit specific to that shock will work. The local dealer and I have been unable to source parts for it, so I guess into the trash it goes...

I have seen some Marzocchi units in some 750 and 906 Pasos and those HAVENT BEEN SAME, as i have in my 907IE! I have Öhlins in my 750 Paso and that "later modell Marzocchi" unit in my 907IE. There is at least two differend Marzocchi unit put to Pasos...

Seems, that 750 and 906 Merzocchi units are same that "older modell" and 907 have that "later modell".
