Shortening the spring that has lost tension isn't too goo. It's best to start with a new spring that hasn't seen and work.

I get those "friction pieces" and spring from KTM OEM spare part to my ST4S . KTM spare part was soething about 60-70€ here.

Jon,
My postings[and yours] are from 3-4 years ago. Had no problems with shortened spring, have since sold bike and have heard no problems from new owner[also on this forum]. Agree that if new spring can be sourced would probably be better but shortened spring is not a problem.
