I've read about starters not engaging and the fix for it, a definition of how the clutch works and so on, but haven't seen if what I am experiencing can be caused by the same. As I kill the engine it seems to be grabbing the starter and spinning it over. I am hearing something I can't explain yet and need to do some more digging but though I'd ask...Could it fail and force engagement (lock up when the rpm's drop) as well as not engaging?

I'm going to look through the manual download and see what I find.

If the starter holds to the engine while it's running up to 2000 rpm (because of the clutch), the starter will have a very short life.
Maybe the starter relay (the one under the seat)has some problem... Try to unplug it after starting the engine, and listen to the engine if you hear the same noise.
You should better removing the side panels to be sure about the origin of the trouble

the sprag is a one way clutch tyrp device so the engine cannot turn it. If the engine run backwards it could drag the starter because the sprag would engage.

Thank you both for the replies. They kept me from hastily removing the side cover, so thanks. I looked and I do have voltage at the starter after the engine is running. I had checked before at the signal wire to the solenoid and did not have voltage there. I still don't. So, I guess the solenoid is not releasing after the start switch is released, even though it does break the current from the start switch to the solenoid.

That was the new solenoid from Yamaha, so I'll put the Lucas back on. It should pull in now that I found the problem to be the dirty switch. Thanks again, and I'll post back with results.
