Here you go:

US models and post-2002 Euro models have a 17 character VIN as follows:

Characters 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier ( i.e. ZDM = Ducati)

Characters 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Code assigned by manufacturer where,

Ducati coding method: (I'm speculating here based on a number of examples)

Mandated info (4 - 8) Type of motorcycle, line, engine type, and net brake horsepower.

Character 4: Motorcycle Type: 1 = street version, 3 = race version Character 5: Motorcycle Line: H = homologation model, L = supersport, S = superbike, R = monster, T = sport touring, U = 9X9 series, V = Multistrada

Character 6: Motorcycle Model: street model variations A, B, C; race model variations 7, 9

Characters 7 - 8: engine information code

Character 9: check digit used to verify the accuracy of the vehicle identification number.

Character 10: Model Year Code where,

R = 1994 S = 1995 T = 1996 V = 1997 W = 1998 X = 1999 Y = 2000 1 = 2001 2 = 2002 3 = 2003

Character 11: Factory Code (B = Bologna, V = Varase (the old MV factory)

Characters 12-17: six digit serial number.

EXAMPLES:

ZDM 1SB 8S 0 S B 003783 US 1995 916 Strada

Note: Prior to 2002, European models had a 13-character VIN, causing registration problems in some States. Here's an example

ZDM H100AA X B 002526 Euro 1999 996SPS

Finally, to answer your question, here's an example from a bike that sold on ebay

ZDM 916S 007151 955 Corsa

The letters ZDM are not Ducati specific, nor really related to the specific serial no. It is a reference for Italian homologation purposes that are not used outside of Italy. Even on Fiat cars etc. one can find ZDM numbers.

It isn't so.
ZDM is the international WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) of the Ducati factory.
Z=Italy (i.e. ZGU=Moto Guzzi, ZFA=Fiat/Alfa Romeo...)
D=Ducati
M=Meccanica

Varese is the CA.GI.VA. factory (old owner of the Ducati brand and today owner of the MV brand).
There, in fact, they built all the 916 during the first year of production (1994).
