Tyre Wear

Had the bike in for its 6 monthly warrant of fitness. All good, but the wear bars on the rear tyre are starting to peek through. The front tyre is also worn. So the outcome is that the tyres will need to be replaced before the next inspection. As the bike has been back to the same inspection centre with the same inspector for the last 5 times he knows I’m not suddenly going to put thousands of km on them before the next inspection.
They tyres have lasted for 7500km, is this the normal wear to be expected?

I drive in my 17" 907IE Michelin Pilot Roads about 13 000km in rear and 14 000km in front, but that compound can be different. Surely with such kms ONLY, if drive carefully without wheeling... About same amount in ST4s. I havent look closer, how long with 750 Paso 16" Michelins, but maybe little shorter, if that compound is "older" ...

Depending on compound and riding style I can go thru a rear tire in 2500 miles on my multi 1000. 5000 on the rear of the Paso would seem normail as that it how many miles I have on my rear and it's almost to the wear bars.

I would say about 10.000 km.

That's actually not a bad number for "spirited" riding in the mountain twisties. With Pirelli Diablo and equivalent tires, I tend to only get about 2000-2500 miles from a rear tire and 3000-3500 miles to a front tire on both my 748 and ST2. The sport-touring tires (Diablo Strada and Metzeler ME-Z6) only add about 1000 miles to each end.

Here's the last Dunlop D-220 rear that was on my wife's '94 GSX-R750....It only has about 3500 miles of mountain-road riding on it....no wheelies and no burnouts...

Here's a 3500-mile Pirelli Dragon Evo from the front of my 748...

We went through five sets of tires, last year. :D

Congratulations to you, but above all, to your wife   .

interesting to see the riding behaviour. Seems you enjoy twisties more than your wife does :D

That's comparing a rear tire to a front tire, and I do tend to push the front pretty hard in right handers.......Our bikes are ridden on the same roads, at the same speed, all the time, and she likes the twisties as much, if not more than I do. I only use my Harley to commute with and the two Ducatis only go out when Vicki can take her bike(s) out, also. That rear tire has no chicken strips, and is worn past the wear-bars throughout its whole tread width.

The GSX-R750 has a tendancy to eat the rear tire a little more in the center, as she has to wait a little longer to get on the gas than I do, when coming out of a curve. She always tells me that my "under-powered" Ducatis just don't like to eat tires like her bikes (her GSXR has about 120 HP and the R1 has 130 HP).

I'm just "lucky" that she is disabled in respect to our riding, or I'd never be able to keep up with her. We still have a set of her knee sliders (pucks) that have a hole worn through them from before her head-on collision with the car. With her handicap, we are fairly evenly matched in twisty road speeds, now.......that almost makes me sound like a pitiful rider.

Lads,

Thanks for all the informative feedback. Now I need to find a tyre supplier who can get them at a reasonable price. The local Ducati dealer has them on the shelf, but at NZ$730.00 for the set I will be shopping around.
Tried the Motorace supplier on eBay who has sets for US$199.00, but they cannot ship outside USA.
Will see what happens.

Fraser,

You can have them shipped free to my home and I will reship them to you. Economy shipping will be 4-6 weeks and cost $47.00. Air Parcel Post will be 4-10 days and cost $100.00

The set of tires weighs 22 lbs and you can look at the costs to get them to you at http://www.usps.gov

Hi,

for the US guys who don`t find tires ... regarding tires it seems to me you`re living in the land of milk and honey. I just put "M59X" in a meta search engine. This is the result (and I`m sure there`s more as in the meta search program I`m using I can specifically search by country i.e. Germany, Italy, France, Spain or GB):
(although some of the shops listing the tires may not have them on stock I still don`t think the tires are that hard to find)
(NZL is an exception. I seached for dealers but didn`t find any :)

At least the Paso's are easier on tyres than full on Sports bikes - then we would really have problems !
The last set of sports tyres I had lasted 400 miles on the back (300 at the track though!)

Fraser, I got mine in about 2 days from my local Honda shop last year and they cost $650 fitted. $300 for the front and $350 for the back. The guy in the shop could not believe how expensive they were.

I have been doing quite a bit of hard riding on twisty stuff around here and thought I was getting through the back a bit fast. I just went out and looked at it and if you guys are taking them down to the wear strips there's not much left. I guess it doesnt matter as long as you don't get caught in a down pore.

Jon That is a great offer of yours. Dose that stand for a few more of us southerners? It is surprising how many online shops in the US don't want our $ I'm sure our visa cards work the same.

Cheers Marinus

Sure. Just send me an email to me and we will work it out. slocumjon@gmail.com

Frasers tires were shipped to him last week. The guy on Ebay raised the price to 249.00, still free shipping.
