Hello all,

My starter is stuffed, there is a short in it somewhere that so far can't be found so I'm thinking of replacing it.
The sticker on it is also in a bad way and I can't read all the numbers - does someone know the part number?
There are some on ebay that look the same from a monster/916/888 etc but want to be sure before I bid.

Yep, I've opened it up and the brushes etc all seem fine.

What are 'choals'?

Sometimes it works OK so the short is intermittent, which makes it even tougher to find exactly what the problem is.

Can't find a repairer or replacement here in NZ which is why I'm thinking if I've got the part number it may cross reference to some other make/model.

Hi there Rob, there must be a local repairer for your starter motor. There are motor rewinders in many towns, so there must be one in Christchurch. Those guys can test your starter for internal winding damage/shorts etc and rebuild/rewind as required.

Thanks for the suggestions but I've already tried all the obvious and have had it tested - all the windings etc are good and it sometimes works. About the only thing left is that it is shorting somewhere (which we have verified with a meter), just can't determine where to fix it.
After a bit more searching it seems that some early Suzuki GS models use the same starter, so it's off to the wrecker on the weekend and start a search.

I know, that in 750 Paso they have used in factory at least 2 different starters.... But maybe "906 times" only one modell...

could it be that one is with 12 the other with 13 teeth ?

I brought a 916/Monster starter of Ebay, £20 GB, brand new (removed from a new bike that was being built for the British Superbike Championship. I asked about the amount of teeth etc, and was told (doesn't matter, the motor is the same, build one out of the two, or just use the bits you need without removing the old one from the bike"!! The Nippon Denso motor seems to fit 85% of Dukes!

Yes, it can be, but honesty have to say, that i really dont remember, how many teeths my starter have...

Had to replace my 906 starter (Nippon Denso) recently, part number is 270 40011A/ 128000-6050, is common to several later Ducatis. Expensive new but got mine on ebay, remember to drain oil, remove all allen bolts (some will need a long allen key (5cm)for clearance when removing case bolts and starter bolts) I used a cut down key with a socket. Remove LH crankcase, the clutch slave cyl. and shaft, neutral switch,etc and a few other connections, see manual. I had to grind the top of the side stand bracket and the underside of the case to remove it.!! you will need to replace gear shaft lip seal. Use Ducati gasket sealant when replacing case, case gasket is nls, a starter motor gasket, water pump gasket, if you remove it,(makes it easier to align water pump drive when replacing case) . I left it 24 hours before putting oil back in, good luck. Changed a lot of electric cable including buying 2 new batteries before finding starter was at fault!!!
