Post by Tamburinifan »

Has anyone put an ST2 engine in a 907?
Straightforward or tricky?
I know there are some issues w swingarm.

It seems to me, the ST2 and 907 engines are a little bit different, above all for the fix points at the frame.
But, someone has put the 888 engine on the Paso's frame.
Antti, a member of this forum, has both an ST (but the ST4s) and a 907.
I think he can tell you a competent advice.

But, why do you want put the ST engine on the 907 frame?
You will not have much more power.
So, why don't put a quattrovalvole engine?

So cases are that different, are you sure?

Do not like 4V, to buzzy etc. ST2 considered one of the best 2V Ducati made.
Fells like I`m gonna keep this for a long time and could be an interesting project down the road.
And sometimes it`s fun to do something just to see if it can be made!

As I told you, I can't be sure.
No matter, the engines of the 907 and of the ST are very similar, so I wouldn't do it.
I'd try to find the big bore kit, if you can't give up to 40cc :D .

I heard about putting 944 ciliders in a 907 engine, in a racing bike, but I can't remember when or where
In this site you can find something about crankshaft compatibility

Yes, I also heard the ST2 944 cylinders and the pistons can fit on the 907 engine without any modification.

Had my engine out of frame 3 times now on my M900 so the swap´s no big deal.

But maybe the 907ie & ST2 engines are closer in spec than I know of? Cams, compression & displacement at least are different.

This looks tempting:

Here's an alternative from FBF

These Forged CNC machined high-compression piston kits are manufactured specifically for Ducati's nikasil cylinders for a perfect fit. Kits come complete with pistons, rings, pins, and clips for drop-in convenience.

Knowing that Ducati don`t change so much between models and often use parts from different models, maybe the ST2 engine is just a 907 w different cams & 944 kit?

Gert, U are very close.... And ST2 engine have newer M16 ECU with only one pick up. 907 have 2 pick ups.... That can be "the problem" to swap ST2 engine to 907 electrics.... If so, then better add also M16 ECU...

Btw, mounting points are same in both 907 and ST2 engines and ST have curved radiator. Its easy to add 944 (ST2) sylinders and pistons to 907 engine. ST2 have much better cams, than 907.

I`ve been told 907 has SS cams but that don`t match the specs here in the 907 FAQ:

Inlet valve: 43 mm diameter
Opens before TDC 20 degrees
Closes after BDC 60 degrees
Exhaust valve: 38 mm diameter
Opens before BDC 58 degrees
Closes after TDC 20 degrees

Check differences on Duc cams here:
http://www.moto-one.com.au/performance/duccamspec.html

Good news about engine mounts!

As told, differences here:

http://www.moto-one.com.au/performance/duccamspec.html

and also can be found from Ian Falloons book: "Restoring and modification of Ducati belt drive two valve twins"(side 212 from that book)

Anyway one "head guru" here measured my 907 and ST2 cams and he told, that those from ST2 are much better ones. I trust him over 100%. He explaned also, why, but i cant remeber all.... I am old man already and leave these things soon....
