Theres one thing I'm having a hard time dealing with this bike is the gearing, it's grossly over geared at least for my use!!

It has a 14/37 sprocket combo which makes the bike happy only at high revs/speed. In low gears/slower speeds it "bogs" and "snaps" the chain. 1st gear is extremely short!

Not being a young lad anymore my wheelie, 100+ mph, knee scraping days are over (too chicken for that stuff now ) , I'm more into city/work commuting and the "slow" enjoyable rides ...

So what do u guys suggest:

1- front or rear sprocket change or change both?
2- what do you think of a 39 or 40 teeth rear sprocket with the 14 front?
3- will I need a new chain with a 14/40 combo?

could be that the last owner changed it. There are aftermarket 14 teeth sprockets, at least this would explain the behaviour you mentioned. My SS repair manual says original is 15/37.

15 / 40 on my Sport with 17" wheels and 5 speed.
The 900ss is a six speed, so first can be geared lower without loosing top end.
750 motor is 5 speed, so there is some compromise.

Not concerned with top end as I usually cruise at 70mph~75mph max.
Need smoother low speed/city driving gearing, specially 1st gear which is borderline ridiculous.

I've heard getting a 15 front sprocket is not easy so what can I expect from a 14/39 or 14/40 combo?
Can I keep my actual chain with these combos as it is in good condition?

CORRECTION...front sprocket IS a 15 ..go figure I missed one tooth on my first count.

So you are running 15/37, which is the original configuration. I was running my SS 750 with the same gearing. 15/37 is definitely too long.
The best compromise would be 15/39. (Thats the gearing I use on my 888)

Throw a 14 tooth on the front and adjust the chain. It will solve your problems the easiest, cheapest way.
