Motolectric upgrade Q's

Has anyone purchased the Motolectric starter lead pack upgrade? I can't readily buy this product being located in the UK but I do know the principles of their upgrade (%IACS mild steel, Hall Effect etc). So I want to know whereabouts the earth lead has been located by the starter motor because I can't see any obvious bolt points - and if it has been attached directly to the starter motor housing in some fashion I will find this useful to know.

Do you have a link for what you want to buy?
You can purchase it and ship it to my home in NY and I can them reship via post to you. I have a freind traveling to the UK this weekend and he could have it mailed from our office in Walsall too.

There is no earth lead directly from the starter motor. this motor is earthed through the casing. at the right top end of the casing is an earth point. from there is goes to a central point on a frame strud just in front ofthe battery. from this central point the ground wire goes to the battery.

Thats very nice of you but I can purchase all the cable and connectors from Maplins. Its just knowing where to put them.

I know there is no earth lead from the starter but this is a modification to improve the negative from the starter and so improve the starting of said Paso.
We're getting there

To start the ball rolling with this earthing improvement the starter motor has to be somewhat accessed. Not wanting to take the whole thing out (via the left side casing) I concentrated on removing the end cap, once done all that was needed was to undo the retaining bolt for the positive solenoid wire - but by the gods - the elements have transmuted from bright steel to a rusty pile of powder! So its going to take a while longer because I am taking the brush assembly to my local electric motor refurbisher.

Reading all this I think to open my starter motor aswell.
I have a little time as all the covers and fuel tank get a professional spray job.
probabbly my season start will be delayed for several weeks.
we'll see.

Phew, done it

What a job that was. I must have worked on this for 7 hours, took the corroded solenoid connector to my local experts and they cleaned it up then I made up connectors, earth straps, cables and half a dozen other whatnots. Removed the oil pressure switch which was quite stiff due to thread lock compound - never sure about that stuff - to aid access to the starter motor. Fairly straight forward after that so I'm hopeful that the starter cranking will be much improved. Thanks to all for the advice.

Well they are not going to be any different than the ones already posted within this thread because all I have done is the same work; though I can report that the difference is amazing. All I can advise is that the alignment of brush plate, starter motor end cap and magnet sleeve is carefully noted. I got the magnet sleeve wrong by 90` and the starter motor went back wards - was I amused at that one.
I remember when my 906 was new with a 19 AH battery and it was somewhat reluctant to turn over when cold, with this modification it fairly zips over cold with an 11 AH battery! Really amazing.

When you did that, did the screw for+V from solenoid get in the wrong position?
Very courious since I have one that runs backwards.

No the +V from solenoid stayed in the same position but the end cap didn't sit into its locator slot on the magnet sleeve. Trust me - there is one - but I didn't notice this at first. It was only when I had the luxury of a day off to figure it out that I found this. I expect this is the reason for yours.

Yup, know about the locator slot.
I figure there is only one way to assemble it
correctly:
Brush plate, there is only one way to fit it & the 2 square dots should match.
Magnet sleeve can only bee in one position or the 2 long screws comes in wrong position or the +V screw will
bee in a funny position.
I am still very puzzled why my motor runs backwards....
