Hello!
I've never seen a post about gearbox. Does it mean that gearbox is very strong on this bike ? Mine is a 93's and it worked very well yesterday yet...
Well, i have a little (I hope) problem with my gearbox: It was impossible, this afternoon, to catch the first gear...The footlevel has been touching the sidestand for a while, but I think that the real problem is not here (helas!). When I touch and move the level with my hand (I assure you that it's only when the bike is stopped...), I can catch the first gear. Very strange. May be the problem is quite simple :is'nt it the adjustment of the level ? The weather was very warm these days and it may have taken some play, close to the heat of the engine. But it seems not to move round its wrist, and there is a spring effect to the up when I try to replace it where it must be.
Has somebody had such a problem ? Hope that it's not a serious gearbox trouble... I precise that the transition to the neutral point is often not too smooth...

Neutral abit hard to find on all Ducs.

Lever adjustment would be the first to try,
second there is a 2 part arm from gear shaft inside left engine cover that needs to be in center.
Good you can feel the spring, then that is not broken.

gear selection can be more difficult with the engine running if the clutch is dragging.
if it drags there is extra toe (or hand) pressure is required on the shift lever to make it shift...the bike also "jumps" and clunks a bit more than usual when selecting first gear from neutral.
it is a lot harder to select neutral particularly - I think we have all skipped between 1-2-1 a few times at some time...trying to find neutral.
the drive train mechanism tends to "bind"...making it difficult for the selectors to slide.

shifting is easier while moving/rolling because the torque pressure on the gear drive train is decreased; it is possible to shift gears without using the clutch (not recommended) if the bike is not under acceleration or deceleration load.

a good check would be to make sure the clutch throw is "FULL".(completely dis-engaging)
a dragging clutch gets WORSE in hot weather and the hotter it gets from dragging the more it drags.

if you are careful you can put the bike on the centrestand and make running shifts with the rear wheel spinning.
as there is little or no load through the drive train the shifts should be smooth as silk.

I tend to slip the bike into neutral while still rolling if I know that there will be a delay at the traffic lights...it's just easier...

Inability to select first gear might indicate damaged selectors...or an over-stressed component.
I guess it is possible (but unlikely) that incorrect lever adjustment would cause this damage...has the bike ever slipped out-of-gear under load?
In my "wild, young" years i owned an XS1100 that had 2nd gear become faulty at the dogs; they had worn on an angle and the bike would shift into neutral under heavy acceleration...this probably happened due to incorrect engagement and repeated loading.

So it was the lever spring, as I hoped. The mechanic changed it: he had to empty the carter of its oil and he changed the spring. The spare part is the same than a 900 ss's one. It's cheap, but the labour not... The gear box seems to be good, and that's the main point. Thank you for your advices.
