G'day all
I was checking the front sprocket today and I noticed some end play in the shaft.Could somebody tell me how much end play,if any, is allowable please.

I believe it should be 0 to .2mm for both of the gearbox shafts

Thanks Higgy
Hmmm,I have 1.2mm.Any thoughts on a cause or remedy. All my thoughts end up with me pulling the motor out and splitting the cases, yikes. :dunno:

When you say end play, do you mean the amount of play with the bike in gear, on the centre stand and you rotate the rear wheel forward and backward to observe the freeplay? Because that worries me on my 906.

the movement of the shaft in and out of the case, I would not be concerned about your most likely gear backlash...There probably is a spec for it but I have no idea what it would be
Measured at the tire it would be several iinches.........at the gears themselves several tenths of an inch

Does the bike shift OK? Is the up and down motion(run out) of the shaft nice and tight? How many miles? I plan to be doing some work to my 906 this weekend, so I'll see what I have and get back to you, The spec I suppose could be a misprint...........I also have an engine apart and I'll look it over to see what might be done to remedy the situation

the movement of the shaft in and out of the case,
Correct

The gear shifts are ok,there is a grinding noise coming from the clutch when it is engaged but I'm sure that is the slave cylinder bearing.I've had to replace it twice in the last twenty years.I cannot here any other bearing type noises coming from the gearbox. The shaft has no side movement, vertically or horizontally. The bike has done 42,600km/27,100miles.

This has finally got the better of me,so I stripped the engine down this week to find out what is wrong.

Turns out there is a shim washer missing from between the shoulder on the shaft and the bearing,"A".
That was allowing the 2nd gear to rub on the bearing retainer,"B",fortunately it has not warn it greatly.
According to the 906 parts catalogue the part number is 067016171.Does anybody know weather these are
still available,if not,has someone got a spare they don't need.
