I would have thought , engines being similar an all that , the thing would only require minor fettling .Was the mikuni donor a runner? Is the fuel pump going ? Make sure none of the breather hoses are blocked off.
You dont , by chance live on the top of a hill , do you?  long , steep ones are the best  ....
I wish I was young again............Id be heaps smarter than last time

I was kind of expecting it to be a relatively simple task as well.
While the tank is off I've just got a gravity feed for the fuel and will re-check everything else again.

I live in Wellington - the whole place is a hill  Good idea but if it still won't go it's a long push back up the bugger.

When fuel is tipped inside the throats, plugs may happen to go dirty, but it sounds like an air leak in the intake folders.
check the gaskets between folders and heads and be sure that a misalignement is not making ineffective your work
have a nice ride, Nicola

Well, it's taken awhile but finally sorted out the problems I was having getting my bike to run with the new mikunis.

As it turned out the issue was with a badly worn key and shaft keyway for the pulley that drives the timing belt, which caused the timing to vary from correct to incorrect and hence I could get it to run sometimes but not others.

Anyway, fixed that and it now runs sweetly with the mikuni carbs on it - but probably could have persevered with the weber as that wasn't the real problem!!
I've put the weber on the shelf should I or someone ever want to put it back to stock.

The K&N filters that fit on the carbs with just enough clearance are part number SN-2530 as they have a taper to the cone and the mount is offset at a angle (I think it is 15 degrees). I had to trim down the mount a little to get the clearance but all is good.

That`s a new one, good find!
Setup looks tidy, any side pics?

Rob,

Well done; that sounds like a particularly difficult one.

Cheers,

Fraser.

No sorry didn't take any from the side.

If I remember when I've next got the tank off I'll get a couple.

Do the filters touch the tank on the side or on top ?

These filters are tapered so don't touch at either the sides or top - but I did have to cut the mounting flange down to the width of the clip.

There is different K&N (ru-1850 I think) filter that is parallel all the way up and these do touch.
