electric problems

i have a 87 750 paso and when you hit the brakes the head light and the dash light dims. when you turn on the turn signals the lights flash with the turn signals. anybody have any help

I've only recently started to learn about electrics, but it sounds to me like you've got a short between the brake light circuit and the headlight and dash light circuit, and another between the turn signals circuit and the lights circuit. Perhaps the fact that the lights are a common factor is significant.
Do you have a wiring diagram to look at? If not, you may be able to download one from 'Downloads' in the Registered Users Menu on the left of the screen. I have found a magnifying glass helps when studying the diagram. Perhaps you could start by seeing if there is a place where all four circuits come together, and then looking at that place in the wiring on the bike.

Do you mean that the headlight comes on & off in unison with the indicator or the light is already on & dims when the indicator flashes?

I actually don`t think the headlights go on and off when the turn signals are on, they might dim a bit as will the instrument panel illumination. If your wiring is original the first thing is to check all ground connections. Clean the contact surfaces and check that the connectors are not oxidated. Same should be done to the light/turn signal switches. Then take a look if you find any damages at the cables`isolation to ensure that there are no shorts (which I don`t think).
Check that your battery is fully charged. Do you know if your regulator is ok ?

The more I think about this the more it sounds like typical crappy Paso electrics. Time for a very thorough cleaning of all connections electric.
Do you have a multimeter??

everyone seems to blame the electrics being crappy , it just depends on the climate the bike is in . but the cable gauge is a bit
to small for some of the applications and the length of the runs
are a bit round about it just takes a little altering to get successful.
the earth under the tank is a big problem for a doggy joint. try there first

and have done it in march this year (explicit the changing of front light wiring, may follow this fall).
The problem of original wiring is the loss of power by leading all the voltage needed through the wiring of the whole Bike and switches.
Really take care of buying good Relais, such as Hella or Bosch, no aftermarket parts from the supermarket :laugh:
Tried them first, but seemed to need even more than 12V input voltage, With less power, the won't be stable to work and get the bikes movement "cut off"

(this shit happens to me) After replacing the Relais with quality ones, no probs at all

This looks like good info that even somebody that is "Electrically retarded" as I am can understand & maybe even take on. I will just need to investigate the wiring Mods the bike shop did when they replaced my Regulator/rectifier

The wiring upgrade with relais worked for me and solved most electrical problems.

Before this, check the battery status (water level, voltage with no loads) and the voltage regulator.
