I having finally, after 1 week of trying, managed to free the knackered starter from the Paso. I hope there is a special place in hell reserved for the idiots who designed how it is removed from the bike. (Perhaps the Italian Motorcycle Maintenance Workers Union did a really good deal with Ducati at some stage?)
The brushes had disintegrated and shredded the armature. Calling Gowanloch's in Sydney revealed a price of nearly $900 Aussie - or over $1000 delivered to New Zealand.
Some searching online found "Stocker's Starters", and the Nippon Denso 128000-6050 (new) starter motor in their store. They have it in stock as a standard part.

Price: US $109.95 on special! (Plus freight)
Not even worth trying to repair even a slightly "iffy" starter at a price like this. Mine should arrive in 10 days.

Good value!
This is the original part from Nippon Denso: not a knock off or alternative starter.
New starter + MotoLectric starter cable upgrade = starts in less than 1 second. Every time!

thats not a bad price Mobius...actually its very good, how much is freight to NZ? (it would be similar to Aus)
the add says it fits all ducati 851, and I immagine the 906 and 907 have the same starter as well,
it wouldnt be a bad idea to have a spare...just in case.

Hi Mobius, just wondering if you tried to email Stockers with an inquiry before you bought your starter motor.
I`ve been trying to email them through their customer support throughout Dec 2010, but it just bounces back.
In the the end i just placed the order for a starter motor using PayPal.
The shipping automatically came up as about $25.
Is that what you roughly paid for delivery?
I`m just wondering because the shipping seems a bit cheap to me. I`m not complaining, i just think it`s to good to be true and there was a component for overseas shipping that i must have missed maybe?
Kind regards
Davo

Hamish,
Bevelheaven use USPS which is just the local post office, not a courier service. But the service is great, I got a complete Brembo F08 caliper from them a couple of months ago (when I still had the Moto Guzzi), it arrived in 1 week. A bleed nipple had snapped off the caliper, so I tried to remove this with a screw extractor, which then snapped off and then it really turned to custard. Easier to get a new caliper, US$125.00.
Cheers,
Fraser.

Hi Fraser , broken bleed nipple huh , wouldnt know nothing 'bout that
I heated , wd 40'd ( prayed ), but it snapped like a twig. I had to drill it out and pick out the threads with a scriber, and it was all going unbelievably well, BUT when it came to the helicoil stage I fucked it up. Somehow ( we all know how !) I didnt get the tap quite straight and when I had finished the point on the nipple didnt line up properly with the nipple seat and wouldnt seal ...... so cap screw and copper washer.
Oh yeah as 2vtwin ( 907 topic ) was talking about his new 907 mufflers needing a spruce up , I thought this would be a brilliant oppertunity to tell him about your wood grain ( nice oak )mufflers Fraser
