Hello,

I bought in june of this year a 907IE '93. The bike has driven about 42.00 km. after a few weeks i noticed a rattling noise in the sixth gear. The other gears are fine.

Has somebody had the same experience ?. i hope it is a smal problem, but i'm afread not.

At what Speed/rpm?

At every speed and rpm. The more RPm the more noise

Anyway you could post a sound file ?

that does not sound good...bearing most probabily (only guessing)
someone else here must of had the same problem,
have you inspected if there are any metal particles in the oil

Does the noise go away if you pull in the clutch lever? In other words is the noise still there when you disengage the engine? Does it still make the noise as you are coasting or only with the engine pulling on the drive train? This would help to isolate the noise to the engine or the drivetrain. Is at a steady speed, only on acceleration, slowing down? Please try to isolate it somewhat.

Im thinkin' its time to look at the ( magnetic) sump plug and the gause filter . I have been told ( no personal experiance ) that a noisey 6th gear is often the early sign of wear. Usually starts off as a bit of a grumble ( not unlike a knackered berring ) and progresses to a full on racket as the teeth disintergrate. are there any signs that its been dropped on the l h side, a bent selector fork ( not nessessarily the 6 gear one either ) could cause this too . As the wize one sez ( one of them any how ) a sound file would be great. hope it aint to bad ....... good luck

I must say that in over 10 years playing (seriously) with Ducati I have never heard of a 6th gear failure.

1-2 and 3rd, yes, never others.

Usually a failure of the gearbox is the result of the insane practice of changing gears without using a clutch.

In any case the 6th gear is so long that the event of failure by "wrong" gearchange is very unlikely.

My guess is that there could be one bearing failing in the gearbox and therefore causing the noise.

As for the selector and forks it is very unlikey that those could be the cause because of the way it is made.

selector and leverage are fisically detached, you can bend the leverage, the gearchange lever pin or the or the gearbox drum control fork, but the drum itself and the forks should be un-effected.

Of course forks could bend, but, as far as I know, it usually happens because of material defect.

First you need to check if there is any residue in the sump; check also the small oil filter on the side (the strainer, the one you can remove and clean at every oil change)

That will tell if something is wrong internally.

Another thing I would check is the drive train, somtimes the rear sprocket gets loose and with the higher gears it is more likely to hear its noises

In the event the gearbox is failing, do not dispair, on ebay you can get a M900/SS - 748-9xx gearbox for peanuts (it is a straight swap) and although it is a big job it is still worth doing.
