question about gaskets

I bought an 87 750 a couple of months ago as a bit of a hobby bike It's not really rideable at the moment, and to be honest I don't really know what I'm doing... but anyway one of the issues is that the gear selector is way too stiff to use safely.
I took the side cover off and the selector was fine, put it back on and it was too stiff. the local dealer said that you don't need a gasket on this and that you can just use goo, but this seems to be the cause of this problem, I cut one from .4mm paper and stuck it on and the gear selector now works fine.
I did a bunch of searches around this area, and this has been discussed periphally, but explicitly have others had this issue and how have you dealt with it?
also what tyres should I buy (just kidding)

On this version of the Ducati Twin you MUST use a gasket on the left side cover. There are clearance issues.

Hey Pablo,I didn't think they had squirrels in NZ

.Gowanlochs sell all of the individual gaskets and seals too, and Ian Gowanloch (nothing to do with Gowanlochs motorcycles anymore),who trades as Italspares on ebay has in his own words "A small truckload" of new Paso parts available,if you ring or email him from the address on his listings. J.

Thats Moto Guzzi burn out and it got me in more shit than it was worth . while I was lookin out the back a gentle breeze was propelling the smoke down the hall and into the house. Wimmin have no sense of humor. Actually I have bad luck with burnouts as one previous one left all the washing on the line covered in bits of rubber ( they stick real good ) huh , Im suprized she's still here

Good to see I'm not the only one.Last time I got a little exuberant with the throttle hand was on my gravel driveway, showing off (as one tends to do at times) I let her rip ,then turned my head to the right to see my daughter and her new boyfriend, pissing themselves laughing, turning my head even further, showed the cause of their mirth,a six foot long, six inch wide 4 inch deep trench in the gravel, and my missus, covered in dust and small pieces of driveway, with THAT look on her face, standing at the far end of it.

.
She must have thought that was the safest place to view her idiot husband from, knowing that I was likely to do something stupid for the fans, but she obviously didn't factor in the gravel burnout display.
