Speedo/Tach cables ... same thing?

Can anyone confirm or deny whether the speedometer and tachometer cables are the same item? I found the tachometer cable on Stein-Dinse, and it says that part number is a replacement for #037038710, but when I search that number on Ducati Omaha's P/N lookup, it comes up as a speedo cable.

Any truth to that? And if not ... anyone have a P/N for the 750 tach cable?

faster just think. How can a cable just connecting to the cylinder head be as long as the one going down to the speedometer drive ?
There`s a number mix up. I noticed that long time ago.
If ordering one be sure to measure the speedometer cable and its core before buying one as some aftermarket parts are shorter. If it`s too short steering will pull on the complete instrument panel breaking the vibration dampers.

That's why I thought it was rather odd, myself. (I also knew I could count on you to reply!) ;) But I figured I'd ask the question anyway. I almost ordered one regardless, thinking that at some point I'd need another speedo cable!

I also spoke w/ Ducati Omaha, and they gave me the P/N for a '91 SS 750's tach cable : 067038720 ($41.14 USD), although I don't know if that will work for the Paso either.

Getting tough, tracking down part numbers. Anybody have the old microfiche parts guides?

the error is in the original Ducati parts catalogue as you can see. They name #27 rev. counter cable and #26 speedometer cable while it`s the other way around.
It looks like the item description and the according part number are correct but position number isn`t.

#067038720 might fit but it`s 10cm longer (640mm vs 540mm) which could cause a bend and higher wear.

just fyi #0795.38.627 is 2" longer then the original P750 cable (850mm vs 800mm). The one of the 907ie is 875mm btw.

I wonder if noone is actually checking at their local Ducati shop ...

My local Ducati shop is 160 miles away. :(

I've always had good luck with Ducati Omaha (Nevada)'s part department ... but even they're striking out with anything older than 1991. :,(

As the old Ducati dealer in town used to say, "they make new bikes every day ... "

Why exactly ? The key often is to ask for the part number and not to tell them for which bike it is. Their computer parts catalogues don`t include the P750, Sport or earlier bikes. These were only on microfiche.
But they can check the availability of every part in the computer system if you know the number. That`s why the parts catalogue is so important.
The guys in the parts dept. are usually quite happy if you can tell them the part number as that saves them quite a bit of time.
While some parts are definitely not existent anymore they usually can order most of the others.

But then again in your case it`s not worthwhile ordering and returning for pickup :truck:
Guess I`m spoiled. I could ride to mine on a bicycle. (but it`s years I haven`t been there)

So, I've been going back & forth with Gordon @ MG Cycle, and he is able to get stuff from Stein-Dinse. I backed up from my original search on S-D, just to see what parts they listed by model ("DUC 750 '88-90") and found that they list both the speedo & tach cables. The "duc tachowelle 750 paso" cable appears to be the speedometer (found by checking the old P/N on Ducati Omaha's site); but I found they also have a "duc rev counter cable - 750 Paso". So I've forwarded MGC the part number (Stein-Dinse's P/N: 400520183, located here), to see if it's something he can acquire in his next shipment.

If anybody's looking for either cable, stein-dinse appears to be the place in Europe, otherwise, Gordon @ MG Cycle has been awesome for me here in the States.

Finding the part number is the tricky part. ;)

 the parts catalogue can be downloaded on this site and finding a part in it can`t be such a challenge

Now why I hadn't I seen that before now? sigh ...

Thanks, G. Saving my butt like usual.

Parts catalogue, for those looking for it, located among other gems in the Paso magazine articles and other downloads thread.
