16 x 40 gearing.

Changed my chain and sprockets the other day, all bits I've been hoarding, an EK x ring chain that cost £20 on ebay, a 16T front sprocket I bought years ago and a new 40T rear cog I found under my stairs. Not very impressed with the EK chain, the inner link side plates have a (lightening?) hole in them which I think is a weak or stretch area and the soft link plate holes were too small. It wouldn't go together(even with mole grips) until I reamed it out a bit. I made a 3mm plate from dural years ago that adapts any flat face(SS etc) sprocket to the correct offset for 907. a couple of old clutch spring screws are the right length for the retaining clip.
I've been round the block a couple of times on it and i think I prefer the taller gearing.
Im off to the UK Gathering this weekend so with about 500 miles to do, I'll see how I get on with it.

Cheers, Keith.

Odd to me,
14/40 is my flavour.
Why do you prefer 16/40?

Longer gears. I seem to be changing gear less in town.

I'm surprised you got a 16 to fit in there, but if the shoe fits….
15 / 40 is common, as is 15/39. I'm running 15/42 on Sport/scrambler, and 15/39 on my Sport.

Cheers, Phil

Plenty of room around 16 sprocket. 108 chain only just long enough though.
