VIN Decode Model Year Doesnt Match Sticker on Frame

Post by Mattm5000 »

I purchased a used 1992 Ducati Paso 907ie last July. VIN =ZDM1MB4PXPB001803

It was sold to me from a reputable Ducati Franchise Dealer and titled as a 1992 model. I have recently run a VIN decode through CARFAX and the model comes up as a 1993 Ducati 907 IE. The sticker on the frame indicates that the bikes was manufactured in 3/92. My understanding is that this bike was not produced after 1992. Based on this post about vin decode (http://forums.ducatipaso.org/viewtopic. ... 5&start=15) my character 8 and 10 should be the letter N and not P. What gives ?

Its possible that the bike was made in 92 but 1st registered/ imported/vin'd ( or sold brand new ) in 93 . It wasn't uncommon for some models to sit round for a year or two before being sold. Dunno about the US but in NZ the year of 1st registration is listed as the model year .
I have a car made in the UK in 1980 , 1st imported to NZ in 87 and its listed as a 1987 model even tho the factory stopped making them in 1980. To get the recorded info corrected I need letters from a car club , a ford dealer and an inspection by the relevant government agency ...........not worth the hassle. :)
I wish I was young again............Id be heaps smarter than last time

Hi Matt.

If it helps, my 907 was sold to me as a 1993 model, and it has the 8 and 10 character as a N? Mine is also a later build number (higher than the last 4 digits), so all in all, it all averages out! My VIN doesn't decode out very well either. The important digits/letters are the ZDM (Ducati) at the start, and the B****** number at the end, and they all match up on your rego papers. The dead giveaway that it is the later version (not the very first type of 907ie) is the 320mm front disks and gold calipers.

Cheers.

Nick.

I've always heard that the '93 models were simply left over '92s so I'm guessing at some point your bike was registered based on the date of manufacture instead of the model year. It's not at all uncommon for the model year and year of manufacture to be different, though it's usually the other way around...

Gents - Many Thanks for the information. I think I will just leave it as a 1992, per the DMV registration. :)
