The most important step is to get a NOVA certificate from HMRC as soon as possible after bringing the bike into the country.

This must be done within 14 days or you are subject to a fine of £5 per day!

My son has a bike that was imported several years ago and has changed hands several times since. A NOVA certificate was never obtained and despite having the Italian documentation that no taxes are due on the machine, DVLA will not register it without the certificate and HMRC will not issue one retrospectively. You would think that since the UK is (currently) a member of the UK that the Italian documentation would be accepted.
